    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Will the young roos darken up as they get older. My two roos are nice, but not as dark as I want. They are 4-5 months old now, and starting to look pretty nice, but I am a little concerned that they may not be dark enough in the right places.

which is more correct on a wellie roo, bright yellow legs or light, almost a buff white leg. This is on young roos, so things may change a little as they mature.

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

I don't think I like the sound of the "dry ice method". Suffocating birds hardly seems humane to me. Seems like they would suffer a lot more trying to breathe, than to be put down quickly through a tried and true method. Don't get me wrong, I hate to see any of them suffer, but if they have to...

Quote: They are out of eastern Oklahoma, I don't remember the breeders name, but the parent stock looked really good. I have 9-10 roos and about 8 pullets. It would be interesting to see if they are Barber birds. I used to have a flock of barber birds, but I ended up selling the whole flock...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Well, it looks like I am going to have about 6 or 7 Wellie roos to find a home for. I have 9 or 10 roos and 8 pullets. Anyone in my area need a rooster? they are about 2 months old now, and I will start culling out in about 2-3 weeks and keep the best 4 til later on. If I can ever figure out how...

At what age can I expect my wellies to start laying. I plan to keep all my pullets, unless one just lays ugly eggs and does not show well, and about 4 of my 8 roos. I will cull down the roos to only 2 later on when they get older. My wellies are about 6-8 weeks old now and looking really nice...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Does anyone have any pics of their wellies at about 5-6 weeks of age. I am having a time with some of mine. Some are easy to tell the roos from the pullets. Roos are dark chested, with large combs and waddles, pullets are more brown chested, with small combs. But I have some that are brown...

Quote: Don't know if it is true, but I had someone tell me that the older a roo gets the more boys he throws. That younger roos throw more females. May just be an old wives tale. My dad had an older RIR roo and he threw about 70% males, but my young RIR threw about 70% females. Interesting...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Ok, I have a question of sorts. My 18 wellie chicks are about 2-3 weeks old now and just looking at their combs, I would guess I only have about 5-6 pullets, 5-6 roos and the rest unknown. But I read where the pullets at this age will have a lighter coloring on their breast feathers, whereas the...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

My 18 wellies are about 2 week old now and I have been trying to tell what is what. Some are easy, big comb and wanting to spar with each other, other have almost no comb, but there are about 5-6 that have medium combs. Now what. When we got them, I thought I had about 12-14 pullets and 4 roos...

    The Welsummer Thread!!!!

Oh no, I had bought about 18 of these little beauties, and was pretty sure about 14 were pullets. But now, they are 2 weeks old and it looks more and more like I may have only 8 or 9 pullets. Was so hoping to have at least a dozen pullets to start off my wellie flock with. Guess we will know for...

At what age do Wellies begin to lay. I bought 18 of these beauties and I think 13-14 of them are girls. Very happy with them even if they are only a couple of weeks old. Planning to keep them all til laying, then scale down to those that lay the best eggs. Love those Wellies.
