well i stayed up way past my bedtime and we watched the whole thing!! interesting but a bit unsettling......really sad that both the birds and the poor husband had to suffer for that woman to get a brand new house!! made me even a bit more worried about Friday......I know that my situation can in no way be construed as cruel, unsanitary, hoarding but there is so much subjectivity.....the woman on that documentary that took the birds was wearing shirt that said animals are friends not food etc......to me some of them could be considered just as “mentally unstable” as the hoarder!

Could you please post a picture of the red cups?

So my second generation any roux males i would get would be pure roux then I breed those to the female roux and I will essentially have pure roux? Same would go for the pharaoh because if a female has one roux gene she shows it. So essentially my theory is correct? At third generation you could possibly breed for sex links right.
Any Roux (Egyptian) males will be pure because they have to have two Roux color genes to be Roux. Any Pharaoh females will be pure because they will not have any Roux color genes.

The problem with the Pharaoh males is that they can phenotypically be Pharaoh but will genotypically be carrying a hidden recessive Roux gene. You will not be able to look at them and determine if they are homozygous or heterozygous.

Breeding Roux males to Pharaoh females will produce first generation sex links even though you may be thinking of them as 3rd generation.

I only made it through half of the show before I crashed.
That poor lady needed serious help.
I will watch the rest this morning.

Last post for today... I am thinking of doing the following:
I have eggs A which are supposed to Lockdown soon. I have eggs B which will be at day 5 that day. I am thinking of: removing eggs A from the turners and placing them on the net in the incubator. Keep eggs B in the turners (they will keep turning). Increase humidity to 60-70%. As soon as eggs A hatch, decrease humidity to 30-45% and continue hatching eggs B. I am almost sure it will work, plus I only have 8 eggs B so even if they all die, they are from my own, so not a big loss.
DO NOT INCREASE your humidity that high.
50% is more than enough.

yes i’ve looked at them but can’t find where i can buy anything locally....as rk and tsc only have meatbird. i can sometimes get manna pro gamebird showbird but only 5lb bags. i can special order from rk and/or order online but overall birds have done well on meatbird so i’ve been kinda lazy about researching special orders
So you have a Rural King and TSC near by correct?
Send me you zip and I will find you some feed.

If you can get 20% protein Purina Flock Raiser, it will be better for your quail than Meat Bird feed. The problem with the meat bird feed is that while the protein levels are high enough, it does not have the higher levels of lysine, methionine and other nutrients that quail need. They use lower levels because it is a chicken feed and chickens don't need those higher levels.

The study that I looked up before pointed out that 20% protein is all that adult quail need as long as their other requirements such as lysine and methionine are being met. The Purina Flock Raiser does contain the higher levels of lysine and methionine that adult quail need.

I did a little digging last night and I think the quail only really need the high levels of everything for the first 3 weeks.

It's raining again here today so I will be staying home doing a lot of quail researching.
I will share my findings.

Ok, picture-lovers :) these 2 runts are 22 days old now.. they love to sleep on their backs on my lap. They are not quite gold, but I cannot tell what other color they have... Or maybe the gold will come later? Maybe silver. I cannot tell if they are male or a female yet.
Cuties.
Still too young to tell sex.
