Countdown to the first egg. Buckle up, it could be awhile....

I know the two people who have journeyed with me so far are going be absolutely FLABBERGASTED by this news. But there are no eggs in my chicken coop, in my chicken run or IN MY CHICKENS APPARENTLY.
Profile 10/16. Who to choose?????

Let’s introduce Nicey. My 4 year old daughter named her and as fate would have it, she is the most friendly pullet we have.

She is a Black sex link like Scary Spice but is much less gold and has iridescent green feathers on her back and wings.

When I come out to the coop she is always the first one to run up and greet me, and she is the only chicken who will let me pet them. She loves to get chest scratches.

she is also very curious and is convinced everything on my body is a treat I’m trying to hand her. My rings, my nails, my shoelaces, my phone, my hair, she has even JUMPED up to peck at my necklace hoping it was food. It wasn’t.
A07D5AF6-B4BF-4198-854F-11E613095401.jpeg

She’s high in the pecking order and used to have the prime roosting spot before we integrated the cockerel. Now she’s in the number two roosting spot but still gives him hell every night as they try to get comfortable.

She’s just got such a fun personality. A little diva chicken. She’s probably the only one who could never lay an egg in her whole life and I would still want to keep her around. She really is that Nice.
But I wouldn’t be mad if she gave us an egg tomorrow either! Just saying! See those shiny butt feathers? So fancy!

SHOCKING TURN OF EVENTS!

just kidding. No eggs.
I want to feature another Welsummer as profile 11/16 but I really have trouble telling them apart. I think this is a different one than Number One

I saw another BYC member use the name Tabasco for one of her red chickensand I absolutely loved that idea, so I am thinking of naming the trio Tabasco, Chalula and Sriracha. What do you think of that?
Here’s one of them (Sriracha?) with Vulture and Chickadee.

Here’s another

And an “inside the coop exclusive”

Well you made my heart flip flop with your SHOCKING TURN of EVENTS comment! :gig I was SURE I was going to see an egg!!! But your beautiful flock is just as gorgeous! :love

No eggs yet today. It’s 1:30PM so I guess there is is still a glimmer of hope but I’m going to call it.
Roosterous is in thin ice. He came at me yesterday when I was opening the pop door and has been circling me and eyeing me instead of backing down. I fear his time with us is short, I’m too wary of him to try to chase him down and carry him around like other members suggest. I’m sure he wouldn’t allow that at this point!

This is Henrietta, my last EE

She’s honestly a very pretty bird. Has those adorable muff feathers and an adorable gray colored beard.

she’s golden and gray and really stunning.

her neck feathers and booty feathers stand out the most, especially when she’s running away from me in terror
CB63A5A6-2C5B-4976-8478-F97850202311.jpeg

she really is not a fan of me at all. She keeps to herself mostly, isn’t a bully but isn’t picked on. Perfect middle child.

If these EEs lay brown eggs I’m sending them back! Just kidding. But seriously..... don’t let me down, Henrietta!

You probably shouldn't keep an aggressive rooster, they only get worse over time. Unless you really want fertile eggs, roosters aren't worth keeping. And they annoy the girls too.

As usual, gorgeous birds!!! :love

You’re so right! The thought of dispatching him makes me sad. It will be my first time. But I have young kiddos so he really can’t stay in all his feisty glory.

Yeah, even mean roosters are hard to dispatch. I have a place in my heart for them too. :D But yes when little kids are involved, roosters can definitely harm the kids, it's best to remove the rooster.

Happy 20 weeks to my pullets!!!! :love:love

I was hoping we could celebrate with an egg but it’s not to be. We are getting down to the end of the flock. There were a couple nest boxes that were disturbed which is new. I have wooden eggs in there with pine shavings and someone was investigating. I’ll take that as a good sign!
Profile 13/16 - our last Olive Egger Esmeralda
My husband named this one. She has the fanciest name of all the pullets
D4C5CBD3-C6B9-4F6F-946E-34BD37E8F920.jpeg

she has a muff like her sister Cheeks but less barring like her sister Vulture. She almost looks blue sometimes, it’s very cool
F234F9D7-D55B-4C39-9AB3-92C347B4F753.jpeg

She’s another one of my “middle child” pullets. Not a bully, doesn’t get bullied. Stays out of the way, kind of hangs back but is relatively friendly towards me.

I thought they were getting close to POL because her small comb and eyes were turning red, but I noticed the last couple days the comb is growing a lot! Like up!
66F8C4B5-8499-4EDC-9811-C80DB3B5ABA7.jpeg

her comb is strange, not sure how to categorize it. The top of her head even looks brownish-red in these pictures.

To me it looks like two different chickens mashed together! Her head looks like a separate chicken from her body!

I just know Esmeralda is going to give me the most gorgeous shade of olive eggs (I’m already deep in my wishful thinking. Let a girl dream!)
