I am starting this hatch-a-long, because I just ordered eggs, but they will not be sent till next week, or the following week, I am guessing, and so my next hatch date will be Dec. That is fine with me. I am a bit early, but seeing the waiting lists for chicks in the spring, and the ones I really wanted were sold. (Predators taking some of my flock as well, but I am curing that.) I sat myself down and thought about what birds I needed or would want for the next season. And I decided more Marans, and some Isbars. I will get those and some potluck eggs. When I receive the eggs I will post a pic. Below is a pic of my last order from the same farm.

They are only one state over from my house, and I most likely will get the eggs the next day after she sends the eggs.

I swear I was going to turn my incubators off until March, but here I am with 8 of my own breeding blue/splash Silkie eggs, and 16 shipped cuckoo Silkie eggs (and was that shipping process a saga - USPS "lost" them for two days), due to hatch 12.10 and 12.12 respectively. Aaaaaaand I'll probably collect this week's blue/splash eggs and throw them in on this upcoming Saturday too....

Here are the 3 that have hatched. There is 2 pics of the 3rd. Still waiting on the little one that pipped at the wrong end.

I did pre-lockdown preps for my 13 eggs. Today is day 16-17, day 18 tomorrow I will mark my eggs air cell slope, and move my eggs to the hatching incubator. I candled today so I could see who will be ready to go into the hatching incubator tomorrow, and who may take a day or so longer and stay in the first incubator, thank goodness I have 2 running. (One wet-hatching, one dry incubating.)

After the candle I have 7 that are ready to go now, I still will put them in tomorrow. All dark, nice slope and no clear spots showing other than air cell.

Really look at the line from the air cell to the dark. If no clear, showing, it is ready for lockdown. (Pic above is day 18.)
Pic below is day 16-17 almost there, but see the clear near the air cell, and no slope.

Also candle pointed end of the egg, if it is showing clear, it is not ready for lockdown.
Below is the point of the same egg. just a tad of clear showing. Not ready. The point of the egg is almost dark...

Day 16 your egg point should be dark. If not by day 18, your hatch may be a day late, or at least that egg will be. If you only have one incubator, when you candle on day 18 mark the eggs that may take longer. And never help an egg hatch with a clear tip of course.
5 of my eggs look like the egg above. Which is fine. I will candle again day 18.

Below is the pointed end of my 13th egg, the pita pinta, it is a large egg, so sometimes the big ones develop slower. day 16-17. I will expect it to hatch a day late if at all. It is currently still alive, all the action by the air cell though. Last thing this egg need is lockdown moisture.

This egg is still currently alive. Moving etc.
