Double Yolk 2018-2019 - DIS

Yup! "Basket Case" doesn't begin to describe it ... although I'm pretty good at hiding it ... as long as you don't ask my kids about my state of mind. They'll tell it straight!
How long ago was the "way out on the coast of MD" member online? I've only been online for about a year, but I was searching for three before I found these. I'm wondering if I have a potential buddy lurking out here!

Probably been over a year, but some folks on my thread may remember her too. I’ll ask and let ya know.

Any updates?

X2. How’s it going?? @littleprairieheartsfarm

@MROO my bad, I found her. She hasn’t been around BYC since May 2016. Lord how time flies. And she’s out on the coast of VA, so probably further from you than I thought. Heathsville. @meganhundley

Hey, that's not too terribly long ago - and the VA coast is only a few hours away ... a lot closer than CA! It wasn't Elaine Shirley, was it? She maintains the heritage flocks in Colonial Williamsburg ... and she's a great resource on Nankin info!

Noooooo!! I really thought they could make it :(
Sorry for your loss :(
It’s okay. I’m not too sad about it. I didn’t expect this egg to even get this far to be honest! It has minuscule cracks at the top and was misshapen so I figured it would be a dud. They definitely tried hard! I’ll open it up later and see how close they were to hatching.

I opened the egg a bit more last night to where I could get my finger and a damp paper towel to press on the membrane. No movement under the membrane, they were very warm to the touch. The chicks are dead.

I am SO sorry! But - here's a silver lining. There's a lesson in this for ALL of us. With every lost twin egg I've followed, the chicks are rockin' and alive one day ... and dead the next, still in the shell. The action seems to stop at right about "Projected Hatch Day."

A quick flashback here ... Years ago, we had a Pekin duckling with a shell that broke - badly - three days before its' due date. We ended up removing all of the shattered pieces (at least half of the shell) and keeping it moist and under the lights for a few days. "Hathaway" stayed curled up in his fetal position until his projected hatch date. Right on schedule, he uncurled himself, looked around and announced his hungry presence to the world.

So ... I know I'm reaching here, but human and other twins tend to come early, often simply due to lack of space. I can't imagine that it's any different with chickens. There can't possibly be enough space in that egg for two babies to pip and zip properly.

So ... I'm thinkin' that maybe an assisted hatch is called for, not just a possibility - kinda like a c-section for peeps. If they are still are still active and healthy on Day 21, it may be time to "Do a Hathaway" and remove enough shell for them to move around when they're ready.

I don't know, though. This is all hunch and theory, since I've never dealt with a double yolker and my only real experience is with an age-old lucky-duck egg. Those of you who have dealt with this before, what do you think?

I’m also curious about their positioning. Stacked donuts or ying-yang?

Once my ducklings grow up a little bigger I wanna try another round of doubles!
