There is a vaccine but it is complicated. I would not vaccinate for it and I am a huge believer in vaccines.

The vaccine is an attenuated virus. That means we humans have altered it so it cannot cause disease. However once you vaccinate with attenuated virus it actually continues to replicate in the chicken, much like Marek's. However in this case it is well documented that the attenuated virus can mutate and can become infectious. Thereby introducing the live virus into your environment.

Statistically speaking it seems that through vaccination we have now made this rare virus much more prevalent.
I have vaccine in the fridge. Readily available and easy to give.
I won’t vaccinate the rest of the flock. They either are already immune or already caught it from Bella.
The decision will come when I introduce new chicks. One of mine is probably a carrier and gave it to Bella and might give it to new chicks. But as Bob says, the vaccine virus might morph and become virulent. The vaccine I have is much less likely to do so than the ones that have been used, but it is still possible.
In the other hand, most likely mine would be immune to the evolved virus.
So it is all about new chicks.
The probabilities of all this bad stuff happening are low. But so was the probability of Bella being laid low.
The carriers shed virus when stressed and as you may remember Minnie was very sick for a while so I am guessing she may have been the source.
She still isn’t right (still has diarrhea and not laying) so I may send a swab off on her to confirm.

RC and I are not the same person but it took me 4 years to try another white chicken. And I still call Glynda Daisy from time to time.
I don’t know how I will feel. I suspect I will get another black chicken. I have always had black cats since I was a little girl. Sometimes more than one at a time!
I remember them all and they were all unique characters, but somehow the spirit of the earlier ones lived on in the later generations.
Hopefully the spirit of Bella will shine through another black chicken in my future.

My

My sympathy RC. Our blind baby passed yesterday. You did all you could. Condolences on your loss my friend.
Oh I am so sorry Greg. How sad.
Big hugs to you. Thank goodness for this forum with people who understand why we are so upset at losing our chicken friends

Oh somehow in all this I forgot to mention I seem to have done something to my wrist (dominant hand). I can barely use my hand. Ugh.
I have strapped it up with vet wrap that I took out of the chicken first aid kit.
Perfect excuse just to sit with the chickens as I can’t do much else useful!

I find it amazing that she did as well as she did. You did a great job with her, there was definitely something more going on with her.
Princess screamed for days when Agatha died and the day flexi died she made the most awful noises then suddenly stopped and didn't make a sound after. That really worried me even though her trumpet alert call nagging used too drive me around the bend.

This morning my insistent lady starts hollering again demanding that I let her up the top of the garden that was a huge relief.

I’m still saddened by the loss of Flexi :(

Oh that’s miserable 😟 and I bet typing is a chore, I am sad to hear this. Rest and some anti inflammatory meds (aleve or Advil is good). Hope your better soon❤️
