Sad News that Does Not Directly Effect the Flock

The pool claimed 2 victims Wednesday night. I found 2 of the baby bunnies dead in the pool, one right by the critter saver. It's possible the baby died before it ever got there but it is not a great look. There are pictures attached but I am not ending. The ladies did come to see the babies to see what happened.

:hit

The bunnies were not back tonight.
Oh my gosh! This is so sad... I can’t take it! Poor little babies :(

Mad as a Wet Hen

If wet hens are truly angry. This lot would have ripped me from limb to limb yesterday. They were soaked.

Of all the hens, Sansa seems to be the most waterproof.

Phyllis had a bald spot when really soaked. :lau This is the first I have seen it.

As to the phrase, "mad as a wet hen". Mine actually seemed fine with the readin yesterday so that got me interested in where that apparently false saying came from. I will admit that most sayings about chickens seem to actually be true. So that made me more curious about the origin of this particular phrase. Here is what I found out when researching it.

From Urban Dictionary:
In the old south, after a hen laid her eggs she would want to sit on them until they hatch. Even if you gathered up all her eggs, she would still sit on the empty nest. So in order to “break her” and get her to lay more eggs, the farmer would lift her off the nest and dunk her in water. She’d then go right back to her nest, so this had to be done two or three times, after which she’d be mad as all get out and start “fussing and scrambling about” Apparently this “broke her” and she’d start laying eggs again.

I love the way they are trying to describe chicken behavior to people with no experience raising chickens. :D
This is the explanation I've been looking for. Thanks!

Oh ma ga, yall! I woke up and to an almost nightmare! I was in the kitchen making breakfast and I look out and see Nilky walking around their yard !!! I froze!!! I know I put them up but the days can run together so perhaps I forgot a day!!!?? So I take the eggs off the stove and run out praying that I do not find a massacre in the coop!! As I approach the run/coop I do not see anyone walking around and am terrified as they should be out and about by now as it’s been daylight for at least 20 minutes! Then I see that the door is locked and the gals start pouring out of the coop....:th(my coop is open to the run but not the yard).... apparently Nilky got locked out last night!! So all was safe and she managed to stay alive:yesss:..... I cannot begin to explain the feeling of terror to think that I could’ve possibly killed all my chickens!! I literally was shaking in the knees!! And still shaken up for a good 10 minutes afterwards!! This evening there will be double checks all around!!!!
Heart. Stopped. OMG, I literally would have had a heart attack. I can imagine the shaking with that adrenalin rush!

I always count. I have a couple of renegades & a couple who roost under bigger birds' wings ! Too easy to miss.
I count, too! My routine: If I don’t count ten, go through the list, “Two lights, two reds, two Wyandottes, Boss Bird and the babies.” Boss Bird used to be “the original 3,” but I lost two last year.
