Yea it seems it’s the broodies that cause all the kerfuffle, I always know when they start to go broody because they get very aggressive. Not towards me but the other hens.
The first summer of broodies (I have four who go broody) I broke my hens' broodiness because of the fighting. I found it really stressful 😬!

This summer, I let them sit for a month or so if they were so inclined. Overall, this cut down on the number of times they went broody, possibly by getting it out of their system?

There was far less stress, as one of my hens injures herself in a broody breaking crate from slamming her head into the bars trying to escape. It's awful and I won't do that again.

The more experience I get, the more likely I am to try not to interfere with their business and it seems to be working (at least for us).

So Saturday is for cat pictures?

It was a brawl 😳

I could hear the commotion, and went to see, and there in the dirt for all to see,

Two tiny raptors, jumping to such a degree, one white and one black, a ferocious sight before me.

One would jump up, the other would too, and tearing out feathers and the dirt was flying too.

Fluffy grabbed hold, of Marty’s wee head, and twisted her down on the ground, then Marty fled,

But in flash she turned! and grabbed Fluffy by the neck, and jumped up, feet slashing, what a fight, oh she led.

Now In comes Henny, with an iron will, she jumps at Marty, on the the ground all three spill.

Quick as a flash Rose joins the fray, it must be the wind causing these clashes today.

Henny beats Rose off, and starts onto Marty, but Fluffy is trying her darnedest to be hearty.

Now Rose and then Henny are out of the way, leaving Marty to thrash Fluffy and chase her away.

And quick as can be, calm reigns again, while Fluffy defeated seeks safety from Me!

Always chicken drama, isn't there. Why did Mr. Pompei not intervene?

I asked because I have often heard people mention that roosters help keep the peace in a flock. I find the social lives of chickens so fascinating!
Some roosters know when to step up and stop a fight, and also know when to let the ladies figure it out for themselves:

Well he hasn’t done any drama control here, bedtime is still full of fun. He just sits up with Sophia Blanche and Penelope and snoozes!
