A baby Buckeye! Either Peanut or Hazel

They were darn cute chickies . What a lovely expression on her! 🥰 🥰

🥰

I would enjoy that!

Todays drive was great. Straight flat roads no snow 😊 70miles/hr most of the way (110km/hr), sometimes even up to 80 when I was sure no RCMP around hahaha.

One day I will tell you about being hauled over outside Winnipeg for speeding 🤭
I definitely want to hear that story! 😅

Qu’Appelle Valley

The Qu’Appelle (pronounced kapel) river has created this amazing scar across Saskatchewan, it’s actually a popular destination for travellers, I have seen it in Spring and Summer and it’s lovely. Winter not so much but still dramatic m an otherwise flat land!

It does look cold. 🥶 Pretty but cold

Well, folks, I am VERY sad to report Lucky is definitely not feeling well. I tried twice today to drain her to no avail. Since she only has symptoms when she has laying hormones, I’d say she is a definite candidate for suprelorin. However, after learning Ruby probably battled cancer for three years and lived because I treated her, I’m not super motivated to try to prolong Lucky’s life. I suppose a round of antibiiotics and anti-inflammatories are worth a shot, but the red of her comb has already turned to a slightly cooler, but still vibrant red. I know that is not a good sogn, having been through it three times already. I admit it… I am SO SAD.

Awww… Peanut! Poor baby,

Flo’s molt was like that this year. Thankfully, her feathers are coming in now that nights are cold.
Oh no. I was afraid this is what we would hear. Remind me how old she is?

Mr P, are you comfortable?

Not sure how he is contortioned there!

Glad to see Marty roosting in her spot, and those Silkies are just determined to roost up high!

You made it to due north of Montana! Enjoy the wide spaces! Avoid the wind
That is why I intensely dislike Manitoba and Saskatchewan, always windy, and always dry.

I personally like humid hot weather, so the dry cold out here is just taxing to me. Right now my hands are just tearing off me they are so dry! It’s painful!!!

Weather Whining Tax (good thing I have these cameras to provide tax!)

Well looks like Mr P is faceplant sleeping 😆

The lovely tail belongs to Indigo, who managed to find the only clear space (snow free zone) anywhere close to the coop...

The roof. Took warm water out in prep for closing the coop and she was up there looking like she was on sentinel duty. Then discovered the ruffians had knocked the hatch closed. Opened it, the boys came out. They tried to coax her to come down and get mauled by them. Smart girl stayed put. Silver came out, trying to get away from Hector (successfully) Only to take flight due to the snow. While trying to get back up the hill to reenter the coop, Kren caught her...... (He seriously needs to work on his technique, but smart for using the snow to help keep her still). Hector was lurking in the doorway, so she ran back to Kren. Snow has definitely cooled the hormones, but still needs some work. Indigo stayed put. Finally (30 min and 3 degrees dropping) went back inside to watch from the window. Nope, not moving. Went to check the temp and came right back....she's down and I side. Even the girls are persnicketty.

Twirp looks cold, and Storm, behind looks miserable. Storm looks like she's got most of her feathers in, just fleshing them out a bit.

Cuckoo is regaining feathers, and for the most part seems unfazed with the cold (let's face it, she's unfazed about pretty much anything but food).

Indigo, my roof-runner.

Had an extra cold night the other day, and found Silver snuggled in between Pear and Cheetah. She HAD been roosting in isolation, but suspect they knew it would get extra cold so moved for the warmth. Whiskey is almost as big as Hector, while Kren is about halfway between Whiskey and Horus in size.

Nellie is looking fantastic (she's feeling a might thin around her keel, but should start rectifying that now that feathers are done). Pear is still in waves, but seems to be working in rings, head to tail, excepting the tail feathers which are coming in nicely. Cheetah looks like he's keeping the scraggly flags on his tail this year, so hopefully he fixes that part next. Blanche appears to be keeping her scraggly tail feathers, while her sister, PITA, lost them all and has snazzy new ones coming in quickly. Whiskey is the tailbomber in the back and Horus in the front (he's filling out nicely and is noticeably larger than Cheetah, while being noticeably smaller than Kren: and his tail seems bigger than he his).

No temps above freezing since the snow, but have been close, and the night time lows have stayed above 0F (-17C). Silver's excursion yesterday will likely break the self-imposed tribal confines with in the next day or 2. The snow is finally starting to crust in places, and she was looking around with great interest....there's also plenty of deer tracks for them to cruse through, and my path is well packed. I'm expecting them to find their way to the deck or the wood pile soon.
