Ask Aurora

This week's question comes from Lorna.

She asks:

Dear Aurora,

Why did Aunty Peggy try to bite me when I said hello? She was mean to me and it hurt my feelings.

Love from Lorna

Lorna Dear,
I can only surmise that you are a young pullet based upon your language and the phrase "Aunty Peggy". I thought this might be the same Peggy with whom I am friends on Beakbook. So I hit her up with a PM and sure enough, there is a Lorna that is a new pullet that has invaded Peggy’s space.

Now I know Peggy pretty well so I am going to give you some very important advice. Please whatever you do, listen to me. It will save you much pain.

Peggy is your better. Know you place little one.

Peggy eats first. She gets all the tastiest morsels. She gets the prime roosting spot. Frankly, she gets whatever she wants. If she wants that most excellent dust bathing hole which you have been working to make for days, she gets it. Peggy has earned this respect and you best give it.

This is “The Way of the Chicken”.

You are a chicken.

Follow the way.

This is also important, Stay out of her way.

She has every right to peck you just because you exist and your existence irritates her. Should she one night tear you off the roost and toss you out of the coop, you should thank her for doing so because you must have offended her and therefore should be taught a lesson.

This is ever “The Way of the Chicken”.

Now Peggy won’t always be around so if you are a smart little pullet, you should start plotting your takeover now. That way someday everyone will have to get out of your way and give you the best of everything. You should start with those other 2 pullets that came with you. You need to start out by forcing them to your will. Once you have them under your control then write me again and we can discuss how you push your way past the other older hens.

Helpful Hint: It is important to remember that whoever lays an egg first moves up in status. Be certain that you lay your first egg before the other two. Otherwise you will need to force you way past anyone who lays before you and many weeks’ worth of work will be lost.

Remember, it’s “The Way of the Chicken”. It is right and good that you should be pecked and learn your place. Be sure to thank Peggy every time she does it.

By the way Lorna, did @MaryJanet name you after a cookie? How unfortunate. Although I do find them delicious.

Sun Tzu would have loved Aurora, maybe he came back as a chicken??
I do not even want to know what Aurora thinks of some of the names I've used. I've got a Butter currently. In the past there was Drumstick, Creamy, Bread. I think if I met her she would flog me for my choice of names.
I know I am right there with you! All of mine are named after cookies 🍪 😱 I mean I can honestly say it was the kids that did it but I really doubt Aurora would take that as an excuse!!

That's amazing they come so close during the daytime! I see tracks all over the yard from night time, but I never see deer during the day. So lovely!

I see you have a heat lamp on - are you not worried about them? Everyone seems to have some sort of opinion on them.
Yes, I'm worried about them, however, I have to prioritize. Food for them for the winter or ..... I haven't figured out a heat source that will spead to the whole coop. The panel is a great idea, but I have roosts going everywhere and a single planel won't cover it.

Safe at home now. I have been looking in but haven’t posted anything lately. Nothing but cloud cover and no visibility to speak of. I did land VFR (just before dark luckily) and all the chooks are doing well. Dakota is covered in mud and I don’t know why. It’s too cold to give her a washing.
Anyways…. :frow
The mud is puzzling, I am glad you are home safe and sound!

Migraine - and it's all some idiots fault... Safety Chat tomorrow will be:

Running one's diesel truck OUTSIDE SOMEONES WELL-SITE.

My whole wellsite stinks to high heaven of diesel fumes, and my clothes reek, my head is reeling, I can't open any windows because there is a cloud of diesel hanging in the air (no wind of course) from buddy running his truck for 30 minutes.

A hex be upon you Human, I put a pox on you ! In the Chicken World I peck your Eye out!

And to top it all off I went to go into the main camp and as I was walking outside I initially thought ‘oh there’s a skunk’ - followed by idiot there are no skunks up here!

Seems someone is playing with fire smoking pot outside my well site!

It is always a battle between being reasonable with costs and providing them all the amenities. I can’t believe that initially very early on in this endeavor I thought I would possibly save money on eggs, ha! Nope it is truly a labor of love.

Ya I know what you mean, and the overhead panels are ridiculously expensive!

I was hardly original with my three silkies, one was fluffy ( so got called Fluffy), one had curly feathers (so got called Curly), and the third I had no idea what to call so I optimistically called her Henny Penny and was extremely happy when she laid an egg😁.
