How do White Chockens stay White?

By lots of grooming of course!

I really find it interesting that Penelope can crow almost as well as Mr P. She only does it a few times when he first starts crowing in the morning, where as he just keeps going like the energizer bunny !

Has anyone else heard such a good crow coming from a hen? FYI - she is 7yrs old and was still laying an egg a week (she was never a heavy egg layer), until winter now seems no one is really laying.

Yes, I have had a hen or two crow. And, in their last molt they were living, actually has a set of feathers that at best were a cross between hen & roo feathers, as worst, could be called roo feathering. (longer tail feathers - though only 2 that 'hooked/curved), plus hackle and saddle feathers were definitely more pointy. I've heard if jokingly called 'henopause', ha, ha. However, there may be a bit to that, as hormones may have something to do with the changes in the feathers.

As far as the crowing, a number of people (anecdotal, not scientific!) have said that if there is no rooster in the tribe, a hen takes on that duty (such as @BY Bob 's group) while they are less likely to crow than a roo, it would make sense that they would some, especially if they were low on female hormones AND were doing Rooster duties.

EDIT: I probably will owe SHRA tax, as if @BY Bob is on, he A) knows more about those kind of things through education than I and B) I'm sure would have thoughts on that.

Hmmm, but Lady F is doing nearly as much grooming as Glynda...how come she doesn't stay white, or at least 'nearly white'?

Why, yes, Gertrude, I think it does. Why don't we charge the pen as soon as mum lets them out!

Why, when they 'escape' from their own pen to free range, do they have to charge into a SMALL pen for the littles when I open the gate so the littles can free range???? Ahhhhh, yes, grass flavored with littles poop...delicious!

I didn't want to make the mistake with the flashlight in there hahahaha.

One night I made the mistake of tripping the alarm in my Hen House - scared the living day-lights out of the poor chooks! I put my glasses on now when I use the cameras
