Yeah. They were both females, and I gave her my only surviving lavender male. He was getting bullied after his mate died. That's too bad, and sad.![]()

What's a gals to do, sitting in the wilds of Alberta, but look for poultry breeders.Fayoumis are native to Egypt. They don't do well with cold. (Or I would have gotten them already).
They are in a large kennel in the coop. So far so good. How are they doing out with the bigs? They went out a day or two ago, yes?
Are they enjoying running around, digging in the dirt ?They are in a large kennel in the coop. So far so good.
You have beautiful birds!!!Just to add to the confusion, some breeds they look VERY different, and some breeds they look very similar. Mostly the hackle/saddle feathers are the easy identifiers. Roos feathers are long and pointy, hens are shorter, wider, and rounded.....except for breeds like Campines where the roos are "hen-feathered". Roos also typically have longer/curving tail feathers while the hens are short and mostly straight (Cochins being an exception).
View attachment 3365692Silver is a good example to start with as there is such a contrast with her feathers. Note the width of her white edged tail feathers and the short length of the ones around her neck.View attachment 3365693Storm's show nicely too with the darker edge.View attachment 3365694To contrast, the cascade around the neck and between the wing and tail, not to mention the curve of the tail feathers even though they aren't reaching past the shorter support tail feathers. @RoyalChick looking at this pic of Kren, I realized he's got duckwing.
View attachment 3365695Horus demonstrates the pointiness well, too. Also the rusty red shoulders doesn't usually show up on hens.
A few more to peruseView attachment 3365696View attachment 3365697View attachment 3365698View attachment 3365699I know Nellie was moulting, but it does magnify the shape of the feathers VERY well.
They also don't do well confined. If it weren't for the cold, my free-range set up would be perfect for them. When we were playing what breed of chicken is this with the chicks, they were initially on the list, but none of the chicks had any purple fuzz on them. As the feathers started coming in, we revisited the Fayoumi breed. Twirp adult color/build/size/attitude is similar, but then she started laying blue eggs.Ya.... I will need to build a new insulated barn I guess, and central heating... AC for the summer...
Hahaha just kidding
Hey one can dream
I am going to check out Frey's again to see what they have, you know just to be nosey not buy anything...
They've got my dream list: chantecler, orloff, Dominique, and jersey giant. As a bonus, they have Norwegian jaerhon! What's a gals to do, sitting in the wilds of Alberta, but look for poultry breeders.
And what did I find?! Cream Legbars breeder about 2 hrs from me. They also have silkies and polish and Cochin .... Bestill my heart
