I RC is our resident Chicken Breed Expert :gig

But from where I am sitting she sure does look like a lovely Red Chicken 💕
One of my anconas laid a very large egg! 61 grams thats big considering they are on the smaller side. I bet it hurt.

Bet that is a double yolker!

When our friend’s wife found out what happened, she got very upset and basically said OMG, are we raising a serial killer?!? He replied that he didn’t think their son would get that bad, but they are taking the issue very seriously and trying to take steps to stop things from progressing any further.
I really feel for the parents - how sad for them :(
Hmm, I think I will stick with my BRs, DC, BOs, EEs and lovely mutts :)

Green Chicken Walking Painting by Kirkner Stacy - Pixels
They lose their baby fluff and grow the feathers out as a normal chicken - it is very cruel I think as the people purchasing them haven't the slightest idea on what is required keeping chickens - poor babies....
Oreos saga-

About two weeks ago while all the birds were out free ranging my son (3) was in the completely empty run playing with a truck. Oreo very purposefully walked in with the sole purpose of driving my son out and he did. Thankfully my son was completely unharmed because he was dressed appropriately for being out with chickens and Oreo thankfully went for his leg’s instead of his face. I reached out to @RebeccaBoyd for advice given her experience with the breed and Roos. I decided to try one last time and once again he attacked me and my husband while we were not near any hens or in “his” coop and run. I decided to rehome him with full disclosure on his behavior. Surprisingly, I was able to do so. They came and got him today. I hope everyone here understands why I couldn’t allow this to continue and knows that I tried to work with him to turn it around. It is with deep regret that I failed to fix Oreos aggression. That said in the end I had to keep my kiddos safe. Regardless of the last month he will be missed, I wish it had ended differently.

We have a saying in the horse world: "It cost just as much money to feed a bad horse, as a good one". I also had to remove Roos from my place that were causing too much drama with my girls, and attacking my mum and me.

And this is why 1) I won't hatch out eggs and risk more Roos; 2) I am forever grateful that Mr P is so wonderful!

I guess nobody will tag me to identify a breed!
So not that anyone is asking, but I can confirm she is a chicken.
:lau
Oh but I did :)

You will need to read back (I called you RC though so didn't really tag you haha).

I confirmed that it was a lovely Red Chicken Hen :)

Glad it wasn't one of those china blue ones !!!

Sending big hugs your way. I know it is hard, but, you did the right thing. I had hoped Oreo would turn around. I love the boys I have, maybe even a bit more so then the hens. As I told you in a pm I have to have a hard rule of no human aggression due to the children in my neighborhood. It would break my heart, but, I would do the exact same if one of my boys attacked. Your son was lucky there were no injuries. Oreo looks to be big, but he was in reality only halfway done growing. Marans are big roosters. With being a big boy he also had big feet and would very soon have a nice set of spurs to go with those big feet. I really hope this experience has not turned you off of roosters. For every bad apple there are many more good ones. If given a chance there are many Jaffars, Branches, Mr Ps, Hades, and the countless other wonderful boys on this thread. Maybe take a little break from having a rooster for a year or two and just enjoy your hens. Allow you son to grow and fall in love with chickens once more. When he is a little older, and bigger try again. This time you will also have older hens who will be helpful in keeping a new boy in line. I also have hopes that Oreo is going to a home where he will have time to come into his own. He sounds like he would be perfect in a situation where he is needed to be the flock rooster for a free range flock, without children present.
Thank you for being so willing to talk to me and consult so to speak you really helped me make the decision. I cant thank you enough.

There will be likely another Rooster here someday. I am definitely not turned off, many roosters never get like he did. Maybe a bit of testing sure but not outright attack like Oreo was.

I believe he did go to a good home. The gentleman had BCM girls and he needed a good quality Roo for them. As good a life as I could hope for him.

Ditto! (that would have been after he got home, and after mom had washed my mouth out with soap!)

Swearing Tax:
Cinnamon Queen: Cross of RIR male over RIW female. Sex-linked, cockerels are white/yellow chicks

ISA Brown chicken: Again, sex-linked. More complex crossing, but generally RIR X RIW, but have a few additional breeds mixed in (minority of %, but not a straight RIR x RIW cross. (Note that they tend to be a lighter color than the Cinnamon Queen))

View attachment 3407317

Prairie Bluebell Egger: Ameraucauna (EE) X White Leghorn. Can come in a variety of colors depending on Mom's/EE coloring, but have a lighter/leaner body build due to the leghorn half. Yours that you are asking about is definitely not a PBE, she has a heavier body build. (at least the first of the two!)
View attachment 3407324

Sapphire Gem: Depending on where you read, it is either a cross between a r Barred rock and an andelusian, or a Barred rock and a haybrid. Originally created in the Czech Republic, regardless of exact heritage, it is a 'blue' colored chicken. so, yours is not this.
View attachment 3407335

French Wheaton Marans: Yours seems to be too dark for this. Despite the words 'French' & 'Marans' in the name, they appear to have only very light feathering, for the most part, on the legs. (multiple images of them had no leg feathering - which I find curioous!)

Amberlink: Predominantly white (hens) with flecks or small 'essence' of brown or light reddish coloring on wings, sometimes on tail, too. Roo: more light reddish coloring, with 'white' undercoat/underparts. A complicated cross of RIR x White rock or RIW, but not a one time cross. (otherwise it would be an ISA) Sometimes the cross uses RIR X ISA Brown

Definitely not what you have:
amberlink chicken

I'll further narrow down possibilities tonight. I'm covering either ones that might be in contention, or ones I wasn't sure of coloring/breeding until I looked into it.
Whats all this?

I am so glad folk on here who understand roosters were able to help you. I can only imagine what a tough decision that was, but it really sounds like the right thing all around.
:hugs

Yes. That. As much space as you can possibly create!
Yes agreed - the 'space requirements' are for commercial poultry operations. In reality, there should be (IMHO) at least triple that requirement for our 'backyard' birds. While it sounds cruel, those commercial places birds do not live very long lives (how awful to say) and thus the requirements are less. Imagine though a bird living 6 or 7 years or more on only the required space. It's fine if you can free range them most of the day (and have a small coop - like I do) but if they are not to be out and about then they need as much space as can get - again IMHO.

I saw a pair like that. SOOO wanted to buy them. Chicken boots! :love

Alas, so do I. I had to get men's to get some that fit. They don't make cute chicken boots for men.

I have the opposite problem - wee teeny feet - I saw such a cute pair of chicken muckers a couple weeks ago - boo hoo.... too big :( (oh she is a beauty I love spots!)
My chicks LOVE dried mealworms.
Welcome Jeanette! Haven't seen you here before, have I? We would love to see your chickens if you have some pictures! All off us, are chicken crazy here :)
