Does anyone on here have some experience with seramas? I am considering getting some but I want to make sure they are a good choice for my flock. I have some bantam silkies and also some friendly larger breeds too. I live in San Diego so I don’t think the cold would be much of a problem for them other than on colder winter nights where I could probably just bring them inside. If any problems arise with the smaller and larger chickens my coop is split in half with a door, and I could keep the bantys on one side and the larger ones on the other side (both sides are large enough for plenty of chickens and each have nesting boxes too). Are Seramas hard to sex at a young age? I’m don’t want anymore roosters, so maybe if I got them when they were adults? Any feedback is appreciated! :)
Yes, i do!

Seramas are spicy. Sassy, and firey.

Seramas are usually easy to sex
VERY snuggly with humans. She always slept in my shirt or puffed out on my shoulder. But they can be a bit rude to other chickens. Mine always wanted to hang out with the older big ones and never the younger ones or the ones her size.

I did full on biosecurity when I introduced Babs and Eli including wearing a tight cap over my hair and changing everything before going to the next group. But I only kept it up for 2 weeks and I did swabs to exclude most of he main pathogens which allowed me to feel more confident shortening quarantine. It was a pain though!
I didn’t realize you could swab to check for some of the pathogens. Good to know if I ever add more chickens in the future.

He hasn’t even seen the chicks yet and he’s already cheating on her with 4 other girls. 🙄
Yep, it’s “The Way of the Chicken”. (Keep reading this thread long enough and you will understand the reference. 😅 Or search for “Ask Aurora” posts in this thread.)

Hello everyone,

Been playing the catching-up-this-thread game. Congratulations to Bernie @RoyalChick Sorry @GregnLety about your sweet fat lady's passing. Congratulations to @Ponypoor and @knoturavggrl on getting brahamas. Congratulations to @TX Chick Noob on getting chicken time. I loved Rebecca's videos. I am sure I have missed lots of important events.

Chicken math has gotten to us. (No, it is more like we are fed up with city and its anti-chicken attitude). We are going to buy land and be farmers!!?? A new adventure?? For now, the plan is to buy land 30 minutes away, live in a trailer, sell our current house, and start to build a house in new land. And we will have LOTS OF chickens. Yummy yummy. We will still be working fully, so no, not farmers, but I will be starting a permaculture dream on my land.

I have no pictures, but I do have a precious broody video from last year, which seems very appropriate for spring.

I hope everyone is having a good night.

Oh that is awesome! I am so happy for you. I hope you choose to include us in your new adventure via pictures and updates as your able. I know I would love to hear about it.

Thank you very much for all the information! At the places i’ve looked I can’t seem to find any seramas, so if I end up not finding any I think I will settle for a mix of random bantams from Meyer Hatchery :).

@lightm might want to start their own thread. I can see this being worth its own dedicated conversation. @Kris5902 had her own for quite a while and there are many people that followed her thread and not mine.

Aww, I just love roosters. The rules where I live don’t allow me to have roosters… but I have 2 anyway! Shhh… 🤫
Have you posted photos of your boys? I have a Polish Roo - Mr P(erfect). Well his actual name is Mr Pompei but he is perfect with the ladies
