I agree 100% with Pastel. i suspected a snake as soon as I read it. A decent sized snake will swallow the egg whole.

They will later regurgitate the crushed shell. (They have spikey features on their neck vertebrae that they use to puncture the egg's shell, squeeze out the contents, then spit-up/regurgitate the shell.

Rats will sometimes take an egg with them, but they will also (frequently) eat an egg in the nest box. I have had them eat an egg while a duck was sitting on eggs (broody) At first I thought the duck was breaking the eggs - then I realized that the rats were eating one a night while she was on them.

Ohhh, bad rat! It makes me somewhat happy that you said I was right! I don't get that very often!!

The mama frequently brings them into the pecking order above the low ranked hens and is in a better position to defend them from curious/higher ranked birds.

Yes, Henny Penny is my 2ic (second in command ) so when she had her chickies she made sure they had the best spots to roost and dig outside. And now Rose and Dorothy are high status pullets (well hens now they are over a yr old); they actually boss Curly around. But Curly bosses Buttercup around and Buttercup bosses Rose and Dorothy around - what sort of craziness is that?!

One day I am going to do a flow chart of the hierarchy in that flock!

My friends all know that I am trying to grow my own garden.
One friend said that I should try horse manure on my strawberries .
I won’t do that again, they taste terrible!
Next time it’s whipped cream only!

Being winter I would discount snakes, but maybe rats? though I am not sure how they would cart off an egg!

Snakes, alligators.... Glad I only have to worry about bears, coyotes, wolves, foxes, fishers, and the neighbourhood dogs!

I use golf balls and my gals are happy to sit on them!

Ha, I would take all of them! I personally think that they are are amazing! I have seen wolves in Montana while I was there for a trip. It was amazing! Not to mention the moose and elk that we saw!! Plus, I LOVE snakes!! I know, you guys probably think that I am weird... and crazy!!
