Ah. Got it. I am pretty confident she wasn’t fake eating. But now I understand.
I will spend some more time tomorrow watching her.
She really is amazing - she hops up from the roost to the rafters without even calculating. Babs at least has to think about it. Not Eli she just levitates.
Here she is about to take her full crop up to the rafters.

So it was a full crop then?

Oh Buttercup is like that - sheesh! Chickens are not supposed to fly!

My event went really well. The chickens we badly abused, the broilers over weight. It's sad. The broilers could hardly walk under their weight. People were dropping them. I was the only one who talked to the birds. The laying hens were awful. They were white leg horns (sorry Bob) Their toenails were several inches long, and one was missing a toe. They all had chipped and crossed beaks. Their faces were pale, and they were skinny. It was awful. I feel good about my score, but I felt tears in my eyes looking at the birds. I almost cried. Even now, on the bus, my eyes are wet. Well, my phone is at 3, so I'd better go I will talk to you all at around 4 or 5. Oh, and the birds had no food, water, and hardly any shavings.
This is so depressing. And sadly, I know it goes on all over.

The digging wouldn’t be an issue I think because of the compact shale, but good to keep in mind. What has really stalled things here is the great thought from @3KillerBs when I started a thread elsewhere on BYC for this - that it raises the fence and the hot wires and a small predator would not ground the fence if it hops up on the board or the stone so not touching the ground. Weasels and possibly fishers are my concern here.

To continue with the idea and an electric fence probably requires a pos/neg fence, or a pos/neg couple of wires strung along there at ground level?

I haven’t done thorough research but I don’t think Premier One sells any poultry netting that is pos/neg, with small bottom openings for small predators. That stuff is usually for larger ones like coyotes, dogs, fox, maybe raccoon.

Single strands I know very little about, I could probably run one without having to pound too many ground so to the shale? Am thinking of about 100 feet or less. This requires lots more research so if anyone can point me in the right direction I appreciate it.

A favorite picture from this winter

Very cute picture.

They almost look like babies, except I know they are adults.

I promise, at the poultry eval, I was not abusing the animals. Me and my other teammates were the only ones not abusing them. Maybe a handful of other kids. It was torture for me to need to silently watch. I promise, I was screaming swear words in my mind the whole time. Especially when I heard and saw people pick the birds up the wrong way and the birds scream in pain.
The event was supposed to be fun. No one there loved chickens as much as I do, so in their eyes, they were doing nothing wrong.
Ack, I don’t like the scilence! Someone please say something!
I am sorry that you had to be at such a demoralizing event. It must have been very depressing for you and people who feel like you do about treating animals properly.
That should be illegal. Even if animals are raised for food, they should be treated kindly and cared for properly during their lives.

Roosting as they should

Well tonight it seems that they have roosted as they should: Penelope and Blanche on the one nest box top, and Sohpia on the other one. Everyone else is spread out, or in a nest box. And Henny Penny is on her shelf which she usually has all to herself.

Finally a night where hopefully they all get a good night's sleep ❤️
And that is what I am hoping for - a good night's sleep! Good night all.

Lety brought home a young RIR and a Barred Rock hen. We let them free range until dark then put them in Cholo's pen. Hopefully they will be accepted tomorrow morning when everyone wakes up .
Can't wait to see them! When are you heading out? Has your Visa come through?
