Cool speckled egg!
Thats not enough. I give them whatever they want.

Ha, mine eat half a bag of spinach a day 🤣🙄😅
Oh thank goodness! But I guess if I make them fat they'll be just about right for my household.

Just don't tell my husband. I'm working on getting him to accept the logic of, "we need more chickens to eat our scraps".

Just know that a fat hen - it makes laying more difficult, and can cause egg binding and/or prolapsed vent. Both are serious conditions - that can lead to permanent injury and death. Not to mention that being overweight can cause fatty liver disease - which invariably leads to early death of the hen.

While veggies are fairly healthy - fatty things like sunflower seeds, meal worms, BSFL etc in excess (just like with humans) will negatively impact their health. Also, lots of high carb foods, like millet, corn, etc...in excess also increases rate of obesity.

They don't literally get half a bag... I throw a fee handfuls for them and feed it to them out of my hands. Bolt is the only fat one, and I think that she is just chunky because of her breed. She has always been a little bigger. "MOM!! HELP! THIS MONSTER YOU MADE ME BE-FRIEND AND BE NICE TO IS SHOVING ME OFF THE NEST!!"

I don't actually intend them to get fat. Bad joke. Mostly they get veggies, edible "weeds" like chickweed and henbit, a tiny bit of meat, some rice, etc. I'll certainly be cutting down on the scratch I toss in their run.

I am guilty of giving to many treats but have cut back now that they are laying age. I did recently start growing some microgreens from black oil sunflower seeds. They were tentative about them at first but after a few started eating them they disappeared very quickly. Plus as a bonus I have easy greens to add. Slows me down on the treat giving since I have to grow the treats 😂

Mini panic attack this morning. Look outside to see Chiquita and 3 of the marshmallows relaxing by the grill. Where are the other 2?

I should not have worried, they are under the watchful eye of Branch at the opposite end of the back yard.

Glad all was well, they are adorable 🥰 goodness they grow fast. Branch is such a good Roo. He really was keeping a watchful eye on them.
