Rockin Robin....

Out in the barn, in my office rocking to oldies, have my chickies sitting there glaring at me for not giving them more treats.

Rocking around the clock.... bopbop bopbop dum dee.....

Pretty chickie, walking down the aisle way..... Poor old Roy - likely rolling in his grave at my mangling his song :)

They are so pretty! I bet they know it, too.

That Roo of yours is sooooooo cute! and I love his saddle blanket marking. Like a Medicine Hat Paint horse (the top of the head on the horse has a dark cap) very distinctive! Your girl is looking for treats I bet!

So aweful to hear you so ill, I hear ya - I was really ill also with the evil covid - I vaccinate everything here for everything hahahaha so yep I get all my stuff also (I used to also get rabies as I was handling wildlife - we joke that I am getting my 'rabies shot' now). If I could vaccinate my chickens for everything I would.

But my backup large animal / horse Vet told me here in Ontario the vaccines are only given at commercial hatcheries and not 'backyard' flocks - WTH! that's ridiculous - in fact I find that the fact there is very little Veterinary care for backyard flocks awful!

When I hear about some here online that are trying to get Vet attention for their chickens I cry - it's such a sad thing. I feel so lucky and grateful that my small animal Vet has her own flock (and cattle and horses :) ) and she does some specialty work with birds in general. I know I will pay through the nose for Vet care for my wee charges but it is wonderful that I can take my kiddos to someone who knows poultry.

My primary Equine Vet (who is semi-retired) can and does get me meds and wormers for my chickens; I can also send fecal samples to a lab through him for testing for parasites. I am sure that he would 'take stab' at helping one of my kiddos if need be, he has been around the Vet world for a very long time, so I trust him if I needed help (of course half the year he is in Florida hahahaha hence my small animal Vet as my primary Chicken Vet).

Does anyone else have issue with Vet Care or getting meds? How about vaccinating - anyone get their chickens done, or purchase chicks who are vaccinated? Just curious as to what chickens can receive for preventive measures.
Glad you are home safely. To answer the last paragraph, my girls are all unvaccinated. I ordered chicks before I knew enough to question it. Now it looks like, to be cautious, I will have to stick with non vaccinated chicks or chickens. It looks like there is disagreement about if this is really an issue or not but since it’s a possibility, Ill choose to not mix. I did feed medicated feed to them for the first few weeks and would do the same with future chicks. I keep a small kit for minor emergencies, the list of what to keep on hand I got was from an old post here made by Shadrick (sp?).

We have a chicken vet here same vet my dogs go to. How knowledgeable or how far they will go save a chicken is an unknown factor as I have not yet needed their help. I am hopeful seeing as how they are listed as an avian vet.

Here they are! The one with her derriere up in the air in the last photo is Twinkie the tiny dwarf/runt. I already love her so much, she keeps hiding under everyone for snuggles and warmth. The one who i suspect is a rooster is on the far right.
Oh My Gosh ! sooooo cute and look at those feathers coming in - that always amazes me how fast they grow and feather out. They are just adorable. Oh I am hoping that the three are lovely little pullets - I agree that right one looks like a Roo he has a lovely comb starting.

Thanks for sharing!

Oh yes they know they are special hahaha! Brats all of them :)

Mum just came to the barn with 'treats' - left over creamed corn - yummy! No wonder they are all so 'food motivated'. My mum has the all looking for treats all the time.

I’m sure they loved that. My little cockerel is going nuts for it already, i don’t even see him in the corner of my eye and he swoops in, steals the corn and runs off into a corner.

Out of curiosity, do yours eat things like lettuce? I hear people talking about their chickens eating lettuce head but mine just shake their head at it.

By_Bob can answer your vaccine questions, I think there is some talk about an attenuated vaccine for Mareks causing mareks in chickens not vaccinated or exposed and challenged naturally by the virus.

None of mine are vaccinated for anything and sometimes I worry about this. But it is what it is, and as long as they don't get Rabies it's all good - apparently birds don't get rabies (first thing I researched when I got these beasties).

Hi all, how is everyone?
Yesterday Dixie passed away with the babies under her wing with them chirping trying to get her to wake up. I sent her off for a Necropsy in UCONN because her sudden death alarms me. Jolene seems like her behavior and is sleeping in the house. All dirty, ruffled feathers, pale, not eating. Hope she pulls through.
Oh no! I'm so very sorry. :hugs :hugs

Sooo cute! I'm so glad they're doing okay.

Just got back from checking my chicks and...either Manny's been hiding something or someone's been overactive! I got 3 eggs yesterday. I don't think I missed any before that. Is it even possible for a hen to lay 2 in one day?

The little monsters act like they don't have two full feeders in the coop! I sat the little bowl of leftover greens down while i was opening the gate and they practically hit the fence like the raptors in Jurassic Park! I finally managed to get a couple pics of my camera shy Meanie - who's beard is certainly nothing compared to the glorious Aurora - maybe that's why she avoids photos?

Hi TX Chick, how is your leg doing?

Hope you’re getting lots of chickie time ❤️
I see the doctor tomorrow, hopefully will get clearance to start putting some weight on it and start PT. Of course I have no idea how to get to PT, it will be so hard for DH to take off work to do it. And no chicken time lately. His schedule and the weather have made it too difficult to get out there during daylight.

When I have time to get outside with the camera I will have to get new Madea pictures. I can cry. I think I messed up and my "that is a pullet" from day 1 is another cockerel. Still not much of a comb, but that darn tail that is growing and the rust that is appearing on the shoulders of the wings do not lie.
Oh no! I hope you are wrong, because you already got rid of the others didn’t you?

I also think it is only the Marek’s vaccine that there is concern about mixing vaccinated and unvaccinated. It is considered a “leaky” vaccine, similar to the Covid vaccine. Meaning you can still get sick with the disease (and pass it to others) but it will be a milder case. So if you have chickens who have been vaccinated you could still have the disease in the property. Which means if you bring in unvaccinated ones they can catch it and be much worse. And on the flip side if none of yours are vaccinated and your property is “clean”, and then you bring in vaccinated chickens they could actually bring the disease with them.

Possible, just rarely happens. I can’t remember the reasons why it sometimes does.
