This isn't a current photo is it? I imagine with those 30C temps there should be no snow left on the ground out there - even in the far north - were I was working if we had 10" on the ground that was about it. Very little snow in fact.

I love his green eyes with his black colouring - very striking.

The weather got better there? Nice! It seems my weather got *worse* (better?) here, because we need RAIN, and the dust is flying everywhere. It seems there is going to be a drought this year in Alberta. It is soooo hot, yesterday I had to drive the whole hour to Leduc to get some ice cream. And, to top things off, I lost my ice cube trays...

There are lots of wildfire warnings, and lots of them telling us to evacuate. This whole evacuation thing never happened before, even when there was a wildfire out of control.

Did you manage to get the chicks home from Peavy Mart ok?

Can't wait to see photos if so, and what did you get?

Why don’t you get a cardboard box bigger than the tub she is in cut it down to the height of the tub, put the tub in there, and fill around it wilth Shavings, pack them down and there you have a level ground for the chicks - once they are a week old you can remove the tub and
Momma can just nest in the box which you can keep cutting down so the chicks can easily access the rest of the tent.
I didn’t read this before moving them this morning :( For now I took out the tub and the three eggs that did not make it. I left the nesting pads she has been on this whole time arranged the same way she has had them. Put food, chick grit and a baby safe waterer all around them. The only real difference now is that the babies can follow her without any issues and get out to explore while still in the safety of the tent. I got to see all of them today, there are 6, all Jubilees none of the silver laced made it.

One shrink wrapped very badly and passed away the other two never pipped and there was no movement in either of those eggs when I candled them.

On to the wonderful news, the babies are perfect and look great very active and healthy in appearance. Brownie made the transition easy she got up and clearly wanted them to follow her she was going back and forth back and forth but they couldn’t get out of the bowl. So, it seems my timing was on point and she let me move them without a fuss. She clearly thinks they are fine to be up and out for a bit. I have yet to see them eat or drink anything but the shells they hatched out of were all pretty much gone.

Instead of try to explain it I'll show it to you. A broody Ducky off the nest. Once you witness it first hand, you will never fail to recognize a broody hen again.
Yup, broody girl there. Notice she is the ONLY hen eating and 'buk'ing? And the tone changes a bit when it is muffled by a mouthful of food, @RoyalChick . Tail flared, back feathers fluffed...and the fast, erratic movements (like, gosh, I need to stuff my face quick 'cause I can't be gone long' urgency)

No mistaking that!

Instead of Pooh, there is Tigger, Kanga or Roo.
Ha...I think she want's to stay awy from 'Roo" No need to tempt the fates! :lau :lau :lau

I LIKE POOH! Notice it is spelled differently than POO. Besides, if she misbehaves, she can always give it a stern voiced 'WINNIE - what are you up to?!?" Moms are notorious for using nicknames EXCEPT when you are in REAL trouble!:gig:gig:gig

Maybe @MaryJanet should consider giving it to her girls. Especially the hen who has real issues with fatty liver disease!

MJ: excerpt from the study:

11.3. Hepatoprotective Effect

In 2005, two teams from Pakistani universities in Karachi investigated the hepatoprotective properties of A. vulgaris herb extracts in in vivo studies on mice. They divided the test rodents into five groups and conducted an experiment. The first and second groups were administered with a saline solution; two hours later, the second group received an additional 700 mg/kg d-galactosamine and 1 μg/kg lipopolysaccharide, which caused liver inflammation as confirmed by elevated levels of hepatic function indicators—alanine aminotransferase (ALAT) and aspartate aminotransferase (ASPAT). The third, fourth, and fifth groups were given different, prophylactic, doses (from 150 to 600 mg/kg BW) of a crude hydromethanolic extract prepared from the aerial parts of A. vulgaris, and an hour later, received d-galactosamine and lipopolysaccharide. A significant reduction was noted in ASPAT and ALAT activities in plasma in all the three groups. The results observed in these groups were confirmed by a histopathological examination of the liver, which showed a decrease in cellular edema and apoptotic cell count, and no hyperemia of the hepatic parenchyma, relative to the second group [105].
In plain English what does this mean?

Yup. I think I have that. With the added fun that she still falls over now and again.

If she isn’t pooping in the nest box that might be a broody sign. And esp a huge poopy one. Was it really stinky smelly?

Oh I am so leaning towards some sort of head injury with Eli, that could account for her balance issues if she had a concussion. And now getting better.
I still swear it was some ear thing going on! Hoping it is resolving itself - I think many ear infections (esp. inner ear) are viral, and hence not much you can do for it.

I am VERY glad to hear Eli is doing better!

And, not for nothing, but being a 'mutt mix' she would be more likely to be broody than the 'designer' breeds and/or 'layer' breeds.....and her genetic mom did go broody and hatch them herself...so it is a possibility that she got the 'broody gene' from mom. :idunno?????? :idunno

Wouldn't that be just wonderful? 🥰 Put some fertile eggs under her....you chicken palace could most definitely hold a couple more!:D
