Oh goodness, what tough daySaw a hawk kill one of our pullets this morning as I was greeting the hvac guy. I yelled, the hawk dropped her but she was dead. A short-time later the tech read the last rites to our evaporator coil that is pouring out freon. Guess I won't be buying any lottery tickets today.![]()
I am over run with mice and rats, the darn mice are so numerous hay when I am moving hay bales they run out from under the bales! I tried to stomp one into oblivion yesterday when I was throwing down hay.Your right, I am sure the fight will not end so easily. We live in a very rural area, they are everywhere. I figured it cant hurt to make the coop a less appealing place. Otherwise more will simply move in once I kill the ones that are there now.
So, it will be a multi pronged approach. I will stop “feeding” them by moving the food outside the coop and into the run. Water is everywhere here I can’t take that away from them but I did switch to a nipple waterer just to make it less convenient for them. We also got rid of many many hiding places.
I would very much like to leave poison as a last resort. It places my cats, my chickens, and other wildlife in jeopardy of also being poisoned.
The dry ice method you mentioned will be first on the list of killing them. Then electrocuting traps.
If they are still present I will have little choice left but to put out poison in tamper proof boxes out of reach of the chickens of course.
I have seen and heard them during the day and from what I read that almost certainly means we are essentially overrun with them. It will likely require all of the above.![]()
Good one!I’m relaxing inside the house with my little Dakota. On TV there’s a documentary about dolphins. I actually turned to Dakota and said “hey look at this, chicken of the sea!”![]()
When they molt I mean. The pinky fleshy stuff is normal intestinal shedding - apparently chickens do that.
Do you think she is getting ready to molt? A few of mine look really poorly, stop eating and get liquid poops.
