7 out of the 10, I sold two of the pullets. So I have 5 pullets and the 3 cockerels remaining.

I also have Tippy who should be laying in the next month. She is Rico’s full sister, Sophia is their egg mum.

All in all I have had a good cockerel to pullet ratio.

So cockerels are:
Rico
Floyd
Penne
Seagull
Spot
Diamond

Plus Mr P - 4 of them are crowing, I am hoping the other 3 do not crow at all.

I will keep them here all happy and content till they are about 16 weeks, start weighing and maybe keeping them in and feed them up a few weeks before processing.

They are not meat birds but any stretch of the imagination but hey 100 yrs ago people ate their barnyard mutts.
Honors to Mr. P. But… ALRIGHT RICO!

Hi everyone. I hope everyone is doing well. I’m popping in to let you know about a new method I’m going to try to help keep the chickens cool in hot summer. I already run films and misters, but we have a vacation planned at the end of September and I’m concerned that we might have a major heatwave when are we gone, and I won’t be able to look after their them. I’m going to put in a little drip irrigation system, where drips will go into some water pans so they have fresh water every day and then there’s also a skinny little soaker hose you can put on the drip system to help cool and wet the earth for them. I’ll let you know how it goes. I did a practice run yesterday, but it was leaking. I learned that I need a pressure regulator, which is coming today. I also plan to filter the water to help keep things from clogging up. We are very hard water here. If all goes well, I’ll put the whole thing on a timer. If that works well, I may put the Mr. on a timer as well. And maybe get a solar fan.

Wow! Automatic waterer and chicken cooling system, it really sounds nifty. After you get back, I would love to see pictures :)

What is your obsession with speckled suspects 🙄
Well in @featherhead007 ’s defense they are awfully cute 🥰 however, not suspect, they are by far the least troublesome of all my chickens.

Here in the desert...
104 degrees and humidity 9%
Mostly cloudy with thunderstorms possible in the evening (finally, rain! :wee:woot)
Rain….

In the past few days I have had 4” of it.

Today I had 1.5” again and it’s flooded everything.

It’s safe to say the chooks were not trying to get outside any further today 😁

Muffy - gosh she is another cutie pie 💕
Not sure who the egg mama is but I suspect it’s Whiskers as she has the beard and cheek muffs like Muffy does
