You can supplement with sugar water if you have too. Also want the hive somewhere sheltered from winter winds and where the sun can help warm the hive.

We fed sugar water for awhile when we first got them, when there weren't a lot of flowers in bloom. We have goldenrod just starting now.

Our hive faces east, gets morning and afternoon sun. Then it gets shade around 3-4 pm. It's in a bit of a ravine, so sheltered from the heaviest winds. We're planning to wrap it with roofing tar paper come fall, to help keep it warmer in the cold months.

Where I live does not permit keeping them.

Honeybees are NOT agressive, and the hive doesn't have to be out in the middle of an open space, ie, highly visible.
