I honestly don't know what the chooks died from. I've been wondering until now. That's some cold weather you got!

Ask Rural Mouse who’s winters can be far more brutal than mine.

I would make sure drafts are covered, plenty of air flow otherwise, fresh food and water daily and they should be fine. Chickens are tough.
Last winter hit -40. That's the same on both temp scales. Daytime highs rose to -35F. Nights dropped back down, and I think hit -43F on one of those. Lasted for several days. That's a bit colder than we normally see, but we routinely plan for a week of -30F every winter.

Yes, did you hear about the 2022-2023 California snowstorm? It was really snowing! It was like 23 degrees outside!
No, I had not heard of that but yes the weather has been wonky.
I am in Southern Ohio and normally it doesn’t get crazy cold here but last winter was pretty rough.
I upgraded my waterer to a large capacity nipple style, that allows for a trough type heater to be dropped into it. I struggled with open waterer and bucket heater last winter it got so gross 🤢 so fast.
I have been contemplating getting a sweeter heater and I really wouldn’t have thought I would need one but maybe better safe than sorry 🤷‍♀️
The husband of Lety's friend, Sister A passed away yesterday morning just as I was preparing for a job in West Texas. What an emotional toll for Lety and of course her friend. 😢
I am so sorry your loss and for your wife and of course her friend.

Oh no! I have a mosquito trying to bite me. I’m here texting you peeps and the little sucker (pun intended) landed on me twice so far.
Ps. All the chooks are happily perched for the night. The coop is locked up and I’m fighting for my life against the killer mosquito 🦟!

Um, yummy…? I guess… 😊

You heading to your job site? Drive safe if so.
I left home yesterday afternoon, i put the guinea cage together first, and got to Midland around 1 AM. Hotter than blazes today. Lucked out that the job is only a few miles from my hotel.

(This is Celsius) Every winter I get -40 for a week, then usually another week of -30, then drops down to -40 again. One time I had -45. I spent most of my time inside and ran the heater in the barn. Usually it warms up to -20 for the next few months with the exception of a few weeks of -30. Brutal.
