So cute. Such fun!Baby outside spam!
They are acting way better, less fearful and behaving like chickens.

I grabbed each of them and popped them under the brooder, they stayed a minute or two to warm up then resumed chicken activities.

The black cuckoo polish has einstein feathers right now.
The brooder plates are barely warm to touch and don’t heat the air under them. The chicks need to actually touch the plate to warm up. They are very low wattage - I forget what mine is, but think a not very bright light bulb. Please educate me since we've never used heat for any baby chicks before. The last decade prior to this year's colder season we've had such bad heatwaves (some years from April thru November) we never needed chick heat. Also we kept chicks indoors anyway. The heat source in the pics is placed on cardboard. How safe are the manufacturer's recommendations for installing on cardboard? I mean I'm by no means a brooder expert and it's strange to see something electrical on something potentially flammable. Educate me all you brooder experts.
This is @BY Bob 's thread. There's a primer attached to his signature.Hi! Im new to this fourm, do we just tell stories from our flock? If so I have got a few!
Welcome! Read @BY Bob’s primer as @rural mouse suggested, and be ready with lots of pictures. We like pictures and any non-chicken chat needs to be supported by a tax in the form of a chicken picture!Hi! Im new to this fourm, do we just tell stories from our flock? If so I have got a few!
I have mine on shavings bedding. I plugged mine back in last night as it was only 8C over night (crazy temp swings this summer), and tonight supposed to only be 9C.
But I may go out and unplug it as they look too warm. Better to be a bit chilly that over heat.
Anyways as I stated I use shavings bedding, the chicks like to hop ontop of the brooder and poop on it. Yuck! So I clean it off every day with a scraper. The brooder is made for use in the pen with the wee ones. I just would t get it wet or use it in a location where it gets wet potentially.
I guess they can move out from under it if too warm…

TY for the info. I always wondered about anything connected to an electrical outlet especially with a heat source -- coop lighting, heated waterers, brooder plates, humidifiers, electric fencing, coop fans/heaters, etc. So it's always nice to get firsthand experienced safety info about these options. The brooder plates are barely warm to touch and don’t heat the air under them. The chicks need to actually touch the plate to warm up. They are very low wattage - I forget what mine is, but think a not very bright light bulb.
The element is also sealed inside the metal plate (like an iron).
So they are safe on cardboard and shavings even if the shavings heap up and touch the surface.
Lovely! I am beginning to feel I need a fluffy striped chicken!Fluffy Dominique Butts Friday!
