You have roosters & a very different relationship with the tribes. I think those of us who say the hens stop alarming when we arrive have all hen flocks & I expect that makes a difference? But as I said I have little experience with this. The *watch & monitor* is a far more common call than the full on alert which I think I've only really heard once ~ for a large monitor lizard. Even when I had a hawk land in one of the trees in the run there was no alarm given. I'm the one who alarmed & got everyone to safety! :gig
It's easy for me to call my chickens. I just bring out the laptop, and yell "WIFI TIME, Who's first?" (BLU is always first, because he loves his BeakBook time with Phyllis) Right @BY Bob ?:lau

Absolutely. Phyllis is forever watching her iPad waiting for Blu to log on. She is bouncing around everytime they speak. :gig

The warning call is quiet. It's only meant to be heard by the hens. It's one of the reasons the hens stay withing hearing distance to their rooster rather than within sight.

I wonder if that’s why River panics when she loses sight of the flock and gets all shouty.

No.
All the chickens here give what I call an ID call when they approach their tribe. I do the same.
It doesn't matter what the sound is. what does matter is you're consistent in making it.
As I have tried to explain to the people here, coochy coohy hello little chickies, one day and cluck cluck cluck come and get some foodies chicks, doesn't hack it. And they wonder why they can't train their dogs.

I usually say “Hello ladies!” When I see the girls. :D

I have roosters, and my chickens stop the alarm call when I come around. Then the roosters crow to say all is well. Sometimes when I hear a ruckus out there early in the morning, I wait a minute or two for the crow before going to check it out. Because mornings are high predator times of day, especially arial predators, I'm usually paying more attention to their noises, than other times of the day.

I knew there'd be one! :D

Straw Day in Chicken Land

Yesterday's rain came down so fast and hard that we ended up with puddles all over the free range area. Although they took swimming lessons during the downpour that began at the beginning of January and ended at the end of February this year, I still worry about them out in the rain puddles. But, no matter....with the rain comes a very fun event that we call Straw Day in Chicken Land. It's a fun filled activity that makes all those rainy day blues just fade away. :D
