Minor mention of lavender: unlike blue, affects red as well as black

Thoughts in reading other things not linked:

1. What is smoky in chicken colors?
2. What is mauve in chicken colors?
New rabbit trail to divert down....need to settle issue of blue - lavender/self blue...mostly seems like would still be split to lavender so no expression of lav.

Still means Aster isn't lavender or split to lav. Still think breeder doesn't know difference between BBS and lav. And a Med roo played Houdini

I need to move them someplace where they can thrive, I am on the extreme border for growing them. Like azalea - I can grow them but they just need some TLC during the winter.

I have a PawPaw tree that is doing well, but I also want to move. I also want to get another one so I can get fruit.

There is also a Cucumber Magnolia that I have in the back paddock. It’s ok where it is, but I need to move two oaks that are getting crowded out by the magnolia.

And of course the regular variety of magnolia with the lovely flowers grows well here, and as long as the frost doesn’t hit it I get lovely flowers.

Being part of the northern most edge of the Carolinian Forest we have trees and plants that grow further south in abundance, but that are at risk up here.

I would love to try growing a Mimosa here, I know @RebeccaBoyd has issues with them and her allergies but I would love to try growing one. I fear though, that it would be too extreme here for one. Wonder if I can get cold hardy varieties…?

The cactus I planted here is actually native to this area and grows well (too well actually!), and my peach trees are doing well. I may get another peach tree in the spring.

Naughty girls!

Wow! I can smell the Magnolias & Peaches from here!

We just used our last Pomegranate from our trees this week. The hens love them so much DH bought 2 from Trader Joe's for them.

A sample of Pomegranate love

So here is another rabbit hole to go down:

My Azur Blue ladies lay blue eggs, bred to Mr P their pullets would lay blue eggs also - right? Blue egg is dominant to the white egg gene in Polish.

Is this correct?

I was surprised at the school chicks that hatched and went on and laid blue eggs, they must have hatched from Whiskers and Misty’s eggs, which are blue/green. I think we all agreed it was due to Mr P and the white egg gene causing the blue to show up.

When Butterscotch laid a pink egg I was all discombobulated! Esp as Muffy laid a blue one!

Oh and speaking eggs - Alex, Jaffarra is the one laying those awesome dark olive eggs, she plunked out one on front of me this morning 😁

They are so expensive here I don’t buy them. I used to buy star fruit which I like, but again they are super expensive.

These days it’s just the basics here we get, which is why I wish I could grow a mango inside here, I know people do, and keep them trimmed short. Also banana plants come on dwarf varieties - I had a nice dwarf cavendish but my mum killed it off one time when I was working out west. Her ideas on cold and mine, for tropical plants are poles apart.

I don’t get plants anymore, too expensive.

Thank you Jaffarra, for keeping the memory of the brave Sir Jaffar alive! :hugs

So, from reading these articles, an original Blue CAN come from a Black parent if the black parent has a diluted black gene? I know Blue x Splash or Blue x Blue make some Blue offspring but the original Blue came from a Black parent from what I'm reading? Now I positively am certain why I never delved into genetics!

That is correct.

Green is a blue egg with the brown "paint sprayer". Storm, Maizie and Pippa all lay green eggs here. Surprisingly, Storm's daughters, Cumulo and Nimbus (both black from her blue) both lay brown eggs. Maizie/Pippa (not sure which one) have offspring in Tuff, by way of Horus, son of Cheetah and Nellie (Hamburg: white, brown leghorn: white).

Storm's parentage is Blue laced red wyandotte (brown egg) crossed with olive egger (cream legbar x cuckoo marans). Storm lays green eggs with brown spots. I suspect it came down to 1 gene for blue egg, 1 gene for white egg, and Cumulo and Nimbus both got the white egg gene instead of the blue. And got brown from 1 or both parents. I have 1 brown egg layer that is a richer, darker tone than the others, so one of the 2 girls likely pulled some of the Marans with it. (When genes get into throwback stuff like Storm's 3 feather crest and Cumulo's 5-7 feather crest, it starts getting really convoluted).

I have zero clue what Tuff's carrying for egg color as he hasn't had offspring yet. He could potentially have the recessive white, blue (without the brown sprayer), green (like the egg he hatched from) or brown (missing the blue like Cumulo and Nimbus did).

Ain't multigenerational genetics complicated?

Time to let thing settle in my head again.

I was really tickled pink when Betty laid a pink egg. It’s such a soft light pink, at times it can almost be white.

So the silkies peachy eggs were diluted with the polish white egg gene, to give her pink eggs.

I have two pullets laying the moist odd coloured eggs, they are a blue/green/grey. Like a battle ship grey almost, but blue. It has to be Little Mouse and Chicki-chick laying them.

The two grey pullets (Patches and Silver) lay brown eggs - that really surprised me, I was eggspecting blue! Or green….
