That Sussex is a BEAUT...Another breed I never had a chance to have.

We once were offered a mating pair of Coronation Sussex but it was w/ the stipulation on continuing a breeding program for the rare breed! We can't have roos!

It really Sussex, that you can’t have Roos! :(

Kids in school can make up nicknames from anybody's name. My sis was "Spaghetti Betty" & I was "Sylvester" ~ good thing I love the Looney Tunes ❣️

Lonney Tunes

Kelly rhythms with a lot of crap - and as a child was unmercifully teased and bullied, of course now I am an almost 60 yr old sexy hottie and those girls are all chunky monkeys 😉

Plus I have chickens and horses!

Info on composting Rhododendron leaves

This scholarly paper/abstract is based on humans, but is in line with what I have read in general about toxicity in animals, too.

So, what I have gotten from this (my personal opinion!) is that while it probably wouldn't be a problem in a decent sized yard with one or two rhodies around when chickens are free ranging, I would not put it in a chicken run where they would regularly peck and scratch the soil around/under it with partially decomposed leaves. I think there are other evergreen plants that would be better suited for a chicken run such as juniper (can get them in a variety of sizes/shapes - creeping to tall tree-like) and arborvitae, or small pines. Again, that is actively planting - and my opinion only.
I need to move them someplace where they can thrive, I am on the extreme border for growing them. Like azalea - I can grow them but they just need some TLC during the winter.

I have a PawPaw tree that is doing well, but I also want to move. I also want to get another one so I can get fruit.

There is also a Cucumber Magnolia that I have in the back paddock. It’s ok where it is, but I need to move two oaks that are getting crowded out by the magnolia.

And of course the regular variety of magnolia with the lovely flowers grows well here, and as long as the frost doesn’t hit it I get lovely flowers.

Being part of the northern most edge of the Carolinian Forest we have trees and plants that grow further south in abundance, but that are at risk up here.

I would love to try growing a Mimosa here, I know @RebeccaBoyd has issues with them and her allergies but I would love to try growing one. I fear though, that it would be too extreme here for one. Wonder if I can get cold hardy varieties…?

The cactus I planted here is actually native to this area and grows well (too well actually!), and my peach trees are doing well. I may get another peach tree in the spring.

Tonight when I got home from work I fixed up the drafts in the Hen Houses, I was going to do that tomorrow anyways, but it is so windy the drafts were very cold. I esp worry about the ones moulting and Mr & Mrs LC.

I don’t see any moderation in the cold temps here into the middle of the month. Gosh I hate winter so much.
You must hate winters ☃️ the way we hate heatwaves ☀️ here. Our heatwaves don't last for one or 2 days or 1 or 2 weeks ~ they last for MONTHS!!!!
