Cute lil growout coop has been ordered, as well as a BIG brooder plate, insulation, and digging barriers for it.
Cousin is letting me use his incubator as well as mine.
Hubby has given me the go-ahead to get hatchable eggs.
I have my 12 egg incubator as well as the lizard cage for fresh hatchlings.

2025 is the year of the chicken.

Be prepared for some chicks to use the nestbox alcove to snooze. Might as well pad it w/ straw & make it comfy for them :) So fun to see your plans coming to fruition!

A heated bucket (yep there is such a thing!) that you plug-in is everyone’s friend, it has a built in de-icer. As is a water trough de-icer, I keep expecting mine to fail any day now, I have had it forever.

I love the heated waterer I have for the chooks, great invention 👍 and the heat lamps and panels are awesome. I hang out by them as much as the chooks hahaha.

Doing chores in the snow and cold is just extra added work, and the cold hands and feet are just miserable.

Tell Rosie if she were here she would be back to school, no snow/cold days here! Unless it’s a bad snow squall with whiteout conditions.

Well, lets make that 3 solid weeks of no school. The schools are allowed 10 NTI days per year. We have used them and are now on regular snow days that will need to be made up for.

I know the majority of the north continues to go to school with several inches to a foot or more of snow on the ground. Kentucky is different. Especially Eastern Kentucky. Yes the road crew are great at clearing off the main road, they are even good at getting the secondary roads clear. We have mountains and hollers. Lots of little side roads that rarely see a salt truck and do not get enough sun to melt the snow or ice.

My county is also the largest in the state and parts of it have the highest elevation. So while my area may not have any snow or a dusting the Elkhorn area will have several inches and be horrible. Of course when they call off school they do it county wide instead of districts.

Now there are some days where I personally feel they could or should have had school throughout the years but they have not. Truth be told they are extra cautious anymore.

That bus wreck has been in the back of both Pike and Floyd counties minds ever since it happened.

I remember the blizzard of 97. I was 13 at the time and ended up getting a week off. Back then, I wished and prayed for snow days.

The snow that sticks out in my memory as a child was in January of 94. There are pictures somewhere but my then 4 year old brother was out in the yard playing. The snow was up to his shoulders. It shut EVERYTHING down for about a week and a half. What really sticks out though was for that Christmas I had gotten a Dalmatian puppy. Yes I know, I was part of the 101 Dalmatian craze so everyone had to have a Dalmatian. Anyway, we got Pongo I think 2 days before Christmas and Christmas eve he got his first Parvo shot. Thanks to the snow and everything being closed we missed the 2nd shot by 3 days. In that 3 day period he contracted Parvo and was on deaths door by the time the vet opened up. He spent a week at the vets and beat it. Our vet actually told mom then due to the high fever he had and how long it lasted it was probably not a good thing and he claimed his brain was fried.

Now, be it poor breeding or the parvo, I have no clue but he was always a little off temperament wise. I did not care, 10 year old on me loved my Dalmatian. He was 4 when he turned for no reason. Scariest moment of my life was when Pongo and my brother was in the living room watching tv with dad. He snapped and lunged and tried to bite my brother in the face. Dad grabbed his collar in the nick of time. He was taken to the vet that evening and put down. I was heartbroken and angry. I blamed my brother then, but, I saw it with my own eyes and Michael did nothing wrong. To this day I still love Dalmatians and think they are beautiful. I will probably never get another one as since then we have had goldens. When CeeCee is gone or maybe before I will have another Golden. Gracie has been gone almost a year and the house does not feel the same without her.
