Oh deer!Happy Pony Sunday everyone.
This is the closest I have to a pony. She is right outside my back door and seems not to be bothered by seeing me.

If you do that, then leave $2.50 on the counterI wish I got pics of that cute little silkie chick at the feed store. The little thing was so calm and curious! I was tempted to put it in my pocket and walk out of there!
Oh yes, I am totally sympathetic to Diane and feel sad for her. Sorry- I was focusing on describing our interactions in case anyone spotted something I could change in what I'm doing. The similarity to roo behaviour is striking, I'll look again at the "what do I do about this roo?" articles again.![]()

I'm so sorry to hear that you aren't making progress with Diane. I know you don't need her to be a lap chicken, but she sounds like she is really unhappy, and it would be nice for both you and the other chickens if she was less riled up all the time. (and her, too!.) I don't have any other suggestions regarding getting her to settle down and not attack....maybe @RebeccaBoyd or @BY Bob has some ideas? Maybe you could ask @Shadrach ??
I don't know if this would work for Diane Ida-biter, but someone did a post about CBD oil (regarding feather picking - but maybe it would help here, too?).I think @ValerieJ already linked to it. I know it is legal in Mass, not sure about NY. But, honestly, I got nothing else.
P.S. most humans who are like that are either in constant pain, or low self esteem. I guess it really could be her personality - but it is just so odd.![]()
THIS!! OH, THANK YOU!! I will try it! I've wondered about some kind of anti-anxiety meds for her and didn't think of this. This experienced BYCer believes they have a working solution for aggressive chicken behavior & even feather picking. We had to re-home an aggressive 7-1/2 lb hen who kept attacking our 2-1/2 lb Silkie. We tried all ideas to stop the bullying but nothing worked. We didn't know about the calming effects of CBD at the time before re-homing. Maybe it would've worked before re-homing a hen who was good w/ people but not w/ our other chickens.

Hopefully she mellows. She is not flying at me, claws up, or ambushing me from the air from behind. So I don't feel alarm, thankfully. Pain, yes, when she lands a good one, which just adds to the general feeling of upset (I could use some CBD oil!). She used to be more of a jerk with the other hens but has learned her place there, more or less. Still a jerk to them at times, but hasn't really been challenging anyone except me.Wow. I hadn’t realized what a hard core case she had become. I have had biters but definitely not that obsessed with attacking me.
The only time I have felt really in danger was when the normally mild-mannered Calypso went broody and was terrifying to take off the nest for her daily feed and poop. I word those long leather gauntlets to handle her because she drew blood. But only when broody and I was messing with her.
I really hope you two can find a way to live around each other. Maybe she will mellow with age?
Yes, true, thank you! She is not a threat to the other hens at this time - and I've gotten better at avoiding her biting, and predicting the attacks.Like humans, animals also have mental health issues. Not much you can do, except the accept who she is and just come to terms with her actions.
If she gets aggressive with the other hens she may need to be separated; but otherwise I would just continue as you are doing.

Unfortunately, I can't call today because they're closed. I'm calling at 8 tomorrow though!Make sure to call your post office so they know they are coming.
Or camp out on the doorstep!
Sounds like she needs someone to let her not be at the bottom of the pecking order and you are her chosen flockmate to dominate.Oh yes, I am totally sympathetic to Diane and feel sad for her. I see her going around and wailing, even when she's not trying to attack me. Sometimes it seems to be pre-laying calling, but other times she has already laid an egg and it looks to me like she is just miserable. She is bottom of the pecking order, and others will peck her away when she joins eating pellets from my hand. When that happens I usually take one hand with pellets away from them and extend it out to her on the periphery and she'll eat, though with a little side-eye. If others don't let her eat at all I let them finish and then give her a handful alone.
I'm of the mind that it is physiological, not her basic personality. She is so schizo (@Ponypoor - sing "Schizo, schizo hen" to the tune of "Macho Man"). Compliant; attacking. Trusting me and (usually) not squirming or struggling when I pick her up; attacking. Eating out of my hand but with some wariness; attacking. Drinking with the others from the water nipple when I push it in for more water with my finger, but keening and wanting to bite my hand before she sees the water action.

Yes, there are licensed cannabis stores in NY now, and before that, the health food stores were selling CBD oils. I think people can grow a few plants at home now. Hmmm. But I need to understand what CBD hemp is versus the psychoactive THC hemp? They do like greens!

I wouldn't actually do itIf you do that, then leave $2.50 on the counter
Good grief!My poor young goose...

It was yummy, though (and filling!!!! Goose eggs are large to begin with, never mind a double yolker!)![]()
That is what I did!Sounds like she needs someone to let her not be at the bottom of the pecking order and you are her chosen flockmate to dominate.
Maybe you need to add some chickens to the flock so she can be in the middle.
If you read thru all the comments, the difference between CBD and THC is explained. I think I also brought it up here once? Or maybe it was another thread.THIS!! OH, THANK YOU!! I will try it!
