They were here too. It is quite interesting - there was a grass roots campaign to install boxes. This is 29 years or so ago. I was told about it by a plumber who came to fix something.
Anyway, enough people gave them places to nest and the population is now increasing nicely.
I may put some in, now that I don’t have a herd of horses to tear them off the fence. Also Bobalink, they are threatened here. I may encourage them also with keeping the grass longer in the paddocks.

Oh Red Wing Blackbirds - they are back and nesting in the drainage ditch at work - they are very noisy! Have lots here also at the barn in the paddocks also.

Not always. Silver, at a year and a half, put herself into the fenced baby area and definitely told them she was in charge. Us, not knowing much about chickens, pulled her back out but left her in the garage with them. She put herself back in with them a day or 2 later. They were about a week old. We started letting them run around the garage while she was outside at around the 2 week mark. She'd come back in, march over to the chick food and help herself. We set up multiple feeding stations and kept close watch. She'd circle through the stations and chicks that didn't give way to her got a sharp peck. They squealed and moved away. She didn't pursue.

What I'm saying is...

Give it a try under close supervision, multiple feed and water stations, LOTS of space, and places babies can run to escape the adults. Do it DAILY (multiple times a day is better). Be ready to rescue and expect some pecks.
That’s pretty much what I do.

I don’t care what she does,; I will clean up her mess, (and she’s a messy eater) I will pick up her poop 💩 because she can’t help herself.
She’s my little redheaded Dakota and I love her dearly’
She’s very affectionate to me as well. IMG_5114.jpeg

Such cuties.

Well this morning I had to trim up Holly’s topknot, I put it off but she was having trouble seeing so trim it I did. And she protested quite vocally. When I put her down she looked up at me with the stink eye and marched off - the told her ‘hey kiddo at least you can see me now to tell me off!’.

Jolly will be next.
I'm with Holly. I wouldn't let you cut my hair. I've seen what you have done to poor Mr Pompeii!

My post office now answers the phone only during a certain two or three hours in the afternoon. You might have to go there.

This occurred to me too. I didn't order them for this reason, but day-old Buckeye chicks are coming in early June! :jumpy
I still think she will go after me, but we'll see.
More Buckeyes! I love the look of them! :wee :wee

Actually Freys ships their chicks with their own drivers around Ontario. The drivers go to all the feed stores with the orders and drops them off. And POL pullets also. They do ship by air, but not sure how much of that they do.

They likely do the 10 chick minimum to ensure their costs are met.

I paid $13 for each of the Azur when I got them - not sure what the cost is for POL pullets…. Or chicks for that matter now.

I checked earlier and all the Orps, Brahmas and Sussex are all sold out. So it seems the specialty breeds are gaining popularity. People want pretty, and they want blue eggs.
Blue eggs.........😥
