I've been crazy busy and miss being on here regularly!

Annie has a broken toe. I think it is recent, and her foot is warm where her other foot is cool. I posted on the injuries thread but would love your input as to the best way to treat.

Her toe is turning sideways & under, she reaches forward in her stride and doesn’t want to let it flex at the back of her stride. Yesterday she would stand with her foot raised. Today I saw it once but think she’s more comfortable than yesterday.

I downloaded the "How to treat Avian fractures" manual, but didn't make a very good boot. https://theiwrc.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Duerr_Splinting_Manual_2010.pdf
It helped her, and she was comfortable on it, but it didn't last.

I won't try tonight, as I'd want to monitor it, but I'm wondering if a splint with vet wrap on the individual toe, wrapped around the foot to secure, would work? I did not have a premade boot but of course now have them on order. I could make a stiffer boot in the meantime, flexible styrofoam but a thin plastic lid underneath, and wrapped better.

Gave her liquid Tylenol last night, a bit difficult opening her beak and a sticky mess, then not seeing bruising today I gave her 1/2 baby aspirin which she gobbled up, about six hours apart, much easier. Thoughts?

Hugs for both you an Annie

Me too ~ love the blacks (& the blues ~ all part of the BBS colors) 💕 What surprises me is the splash variants within the BBS breeding chart. @rural mouse very well must know why 👌
Not a clue WHY it does, simply know it DOES.

They say “Once you go black, never go back!” So I guess that’s true. :idunno
Don’t be shocked by this! I have heard it so many times.
At the tire shop, they asked me if I wanted whitewalls or black trim, they said it then.
The candy store was selling red and black licorice whips. I chose black. They said it then too!
My old mustang was black and the dealer mentioned that too!

I have never dealt with a broken bone so I will let others provide advice. I don't know if this helps but Aurora has spent her whole life with a broken toe that did not get set.

Aurora's toe.

I sincerely hope you get the help you need so she gets help.

Sadly not in winter though.
That goes for most of us ☹️. I don't get snow but all the leaves on the Pomegranate trees get as bare as any other wintering tree. Only our grapefruit & lemon trees keep their leaves year-round

Our friend helped DH top off two of the Pomegranate trees. Only 3 more yard trees to go!

BEFORE ~ way way too tall Pomegranate bush. Silkies in the yard & Dana in the garden bed.

AFTER ~ Pomegranate is now shorter. Not sure the two raised garden beds will get planted this year w/ my arm not so strong yet. The hens aren't interested in the beds since they're so bare now.

The neighbor behind us w/ a swimming pool planted a tall tree right next to his pool deck & never prunes it ~ hope the roots aren't growing into his deck or pool walls. He'll have plenty of leaves to pool skim every year :idunno

I love pictures of your chickens truly free ranging in all that space!!! :love I sure wish I could do that! But everyone that has tried it in this area has lost their chickens to predators. We have so many ground predators. More so than aerial ones.
I'm surrounded by alfalfa fields, cattle, horses, and hunters. Even the deer take an occasional hit and everyone keeps an eye out for coyotes, wolves, foxes, mountain lions, etc. Skunks too get shot when seen and a safe angle can be had. The critter visiting your neighbor will visit you too. It doesn't understand property lines.

Now, that doesn't mean shooting everything that moves. It has to be threatening your family, livestock or pets unless is hunting season and you have tags to hunt there.

The mountains around us are wild enough for the major predators to feel safe from humans. They're wary and usually willing to retreat over confront. Same holds true of the prey animals. It's when a wild (or feral) animal is hungry and sees human habitation as source for food that problems arise.

Kiddo's cousins came over, they all got to hold a chick. Yeti was on her best behavior, but was "too big" for one cousin so I brought out little Nosy Posy for some snuggles. Comrade also came out to be petted, he was really enjoying himself. ❤️ my mother in law says she could be a chicken lady, if only she didn't live in town. 😆 she is much too busy in my opinion!
