Oh, your Royal Worshipfulness.
These people don’t know what they’re saying. Joking around about beards and other crazy comments. Please forgive them, after all, they are only hoomans. They don’t know any better.

I've been waiting until it actually happened to post this.

Today Rosie did the most selfless thing she could do for her horse Russ. It has broken her heart but she gave him back to the girl we bought him from. Russ is old and sadly getting old sucks and he has arthritis. We have tried to manage it for the last year but what he really needs is access to be turned out 24/7 so he can move around and stretch those legs. Hand grazing and being turned out a hour a day down at the ring was not enough. He has been retired from riding for almost a year now. We looked for pasture boarding for him but just not a option. Getting turned out with her friends herd on the strip job and only laying eyes on him every 2 or 3 days is also out of the question, even though it was offered. Russ is worth his weight in gold and deserves better.

This afternoon Russ went home. He is going to the home he knew from the time he was 2 until we bought him. He is going home to a 60 acre pasture with several run in sheds. He is going home to his cows that he loved so much and will resume his old job. When he was not being ridden Russ was the babysitter gelding. He was the one who was trusted with young dumb horses to teach them herd manners. Shelby actually has a 1 year old donkey she cannot wait to introduce to Russ. I was told he needed brought down a peg or two. If she see's that he no longer wants to be a babysitter plan B is the senior pasture which is only 10 acres but home to her 26 and 29 year old mares that Russ once knew.

Rosie is hurting right now. I'm proud of her though as she did the hard part which she originally did not want to do. She put the halter on him for the final time and lead him down to the trailer and loaded him up with tears running down her cheeks. She is welcome to go visit him and the farm whenever she wants.

Safe travels old man. Thank you for everything you taught Rosie. Enjoy you golden years of retirement. I hope you know you are taking a huge piece of all of our hearts with you.

Getting old sure does suck, for horses and chickens.

But it is the best thing for him, tell Rosie she is a true horsewoman, putting her horse’s well-being before her own desires.

You all mention your broodies....well...
I have 3 'moms' brooding chicks right now (2 with 2 chicks each, 1 with 1 chick. Thankfully the 1 chick mom's chick hatched shortly after my gentler hen with 2, so the 2 moms & 3 chicks are being raised in the same broody coop/pen - so the lone chick has some friends to grow up with & play with.

I also have 4 that are sitting on eggs, and 3 more that keep thinking about hatching, but I steal their eggs, and they go back to laying then go broody again. thankfully, my 1/2 broody girl quit!

I will say, these last few weeks my egg production has definitely gone way down, what with so many broody girls!

And @RoyalChick ... you will never guess who is sitting on eggs this spring/summer.....

Crop girl went broody again this year - after a year off. She is a fierce defender of her nest (pecks the heck out of me when I check to see what has been gifted to her during the day!), but she was a great mom, so I am happy about this

Oh Crop Girl is a trooper! I am thrilled she is doing so well

I confess I am confused. Why is it the beard that makes it hard for them to see? Isn’t that underneath the beak? I would think it is the crazy topknot that is the issue with line of sight.

The side muffs also tend to impair my ladies’ vision, I pluck the silkies muffs, and trim the bigger girls muffs. The feathers tend to grow up and over the eyes.

Little Brow, who has the marking above her left eye, on the right side. She is friendly and interested in me when I approach, always jumps up first to see what's what. Doesn't mind being picked up to be lifted and shown things, and steps on to my hand.

Well now, I always said, if you have animals they should be treated like family, and cares for as best as possible - they rely upon us for everything.

That includes the good and the bad times.
