Yes, her reasoning is exactly the same one that has come up here on a few occasions. “The vaccine has been known to be leaky and I can’t vaccinate the chicks without risking my flock.”

Now this lady has some very valuable Dark Brahmas she shows and takes her birds very seriously. I believe she thinks she is doing what is best for her flock and for people she sells to. The show barn I got the silkies from believes the exact same for the same reasons. As did Alchemist Farms where I got my first chickens from. I think many people believe this.

I am with RC on this though and I do believe the study that said this has been misinterpreted and also not supported by other studies.

I will admit I was not overly concerned as I had never had an issue here, this may well prove to have been a huge mistake depending on how things go with Rue. It remains a possibility I can’t dismiss. I am currently seriously considering sending blood to the lab RC mentioned. I would very much like know one way or another.

It's so frustrating when misinformation takes hold. Ugh. I hope for her sake it is never introduced to her flock.

My Peavey Mart chicks were all
Mareks and Coccidiosis vaccinated. No problems at all, I had no worries about it.

The term leaky virus is used for a live virus vaccine that can infect another unvax’ed host. Very rare and has to have some special circumstances to make this leap.

I think people hear about the issue with polio being transmitted over here by children that have been vaccinated with a live polio vaccine in some 3rd world countries, they arrive in NA and have been known to infect others who have not been vaccinated here. And actually Polio is considered eradicated (thank goodness!), so when people hear about an ‘out break’ here they panic - no one is given a polio vaccine now that I know of.

I think there is a newer type of Mareks vaccine - I seem to recall having read some where.

You’re absolutely right and I agree 100%.

I think it’s one of those topics that has a higher tendency to mix emotions into it and therefore it gets tricky to address. No one wants to do something that can hurt their flock so they err on the side they feel is less risky.

I looked it up for the sake of accuracy:
The paper, “Imperfect Vaccination Can Enhance the Transmission of Highly Virulent Pathogens,” was published in PLOS Biology by Andrew Read and colleagues(DOI:10.1371/journal.pbio.1002198) it came out in 2015 and it spread like wildfire but it’s misinterpreted information that spread unfortunately.

You’re spot on about the polio vaccine being cited in reference to this paper and it is one of the reasons used to make the false claims that persist today. In 2021 the author of the paper Andrew Read spoke out about his paper being misused.

I will leave it there, I know this can be hot-button topic.

Snickers? Oh you mean the chocolate covered peanuts stashed away in the feed bin in the barn? Yummy! Twice a day I remember they are there -
when I feed horses morning and afternoon hahaha.

In the midst of a heat event here - records have been broke for the earliest heat events recorded.

Even for me it’s grim, I am going to come home and work from home tomorrow so I can keep an eye on the horses and chooks.

Out west though I am happy to see this cooler wet weather - up here it’s much needed with the wildfire situation

I had to move Hattie out of the main coop nest box again.

Aurora attacked her twice since I moved her out of the coop.

And Hattie then went back into the main coop.



She is clearly more stressed by the heat than anyone else.

So I put her in with the Phyllistines. That keeps her seperate from Aurora and prevents her from getting back into main coop nest box with which she seems to be obsessed.

First encounter video. It's long but worth the watch. About halfway through their relationships are established.

As you can see, Hattie still has some spunk left.

They are sleeping together tonight in the Cluckle Hut.

Hopefully this enables Hattie the time to get used to the heat. The Phyllistines will be mixing with the main group later this week. Podoubly as early as Thursday evening so Hattie won't be in with them too long.

They look like they were getting along well.

Hopefully the weather breaks and is cooler by the end of the week.

If it’s in the desk at work it’s not there anymore! I bet. One of the guys has found it and absconded with it for sure!
