The dilemna here is nest boxes.
I do not like how much space the big shelves take up, and a "single" metal shelf is too small for the hens to walk between nests, which would be necessary if we use plastic tubs so they won't flip off the shelf.
Dad and I talked about taking OSB and cabinet doors (he has hundreds of them) to make a six-box nest to hang on the wall...I do like that plan because it doesn't cut across any of the windows.
Do we need walkways and ramps for them? That's what my brain is having trouble with.
A lip of 3-6 inches is a good idea. They like to walk along and peer inside (at least here). They also like to think about a box first. The ones at my In Laws are a bank with the bottom sitting almost on the ground. The upper bank they can peer into from the ground. It doesn't have a lip to walk along.

Door build update:

At a pause: drill is battery powered and BOTH batteries are dead.

Wood is cut, rough sanded and waiting on drilling holes so can assemble (after trip back to town to exchange uncut wood due to warps/knots: warp removers don't exist, and I'm not going to battle that too)

2x4s for outer frame, 2x6 for cross braces x 3, hatch with 2x6 for mount, frame will be hatch stop. Window is scrapped at this time. Gate hinges for the whole door, going into the 2x6 for stability. Single clad, 1/2 inch plywood

Lunch break, then will try drill and get 2nd battery charging. Going to skip the 1st coat of poly (pre-assembly) in favor of getting all assembled today. Then can do a coat each day after work until Sunday (next day off) when can add hardware and hang....and get 24 hours between coats.

Something like this?

Note: I checked the window and it's a really odd double paned slide, 40some odd inches along the slide x upper 20s the other way....all wood frame, including the slide...and filthy enough to have to slide it apart to clean the glass. I'm not sure the wood will even slide anymore. Might be simpler to groove some new wood for the panes of glass....If I had a router....do 2 windows and save them for the coop build.
Yes! Roughly like that. Let your imagination work on configurations and see what will work best for you regarding both constructing and usage.

Baby wattles :love A couple minutes into Thursday here but it's still Wattle Wednesday somewhere in the world.

After an hour on charger, had enough juice to drill 1 hole. Plan.....ummm....G? Poly all but 1 side each piece. Let it dry till after work tomorrow. Poly other side. Drill, maybe assemble Friday. Poly again Saturday, Sunday, Monday. Hardware and hang next week with Tuesday to finish curing.

Now to go shower. My fingers are sticky....after washing...birds are everywhere as normal.

Edit: one of the recommended ways to get polyurethane off hands (the only one I have stuff for) is cooking oil and salt. It works!
