Bucky (who is very hard to get photos of) has astonishingly orange legs.

Hard to say. This picture the legs don’t look weirdly orange but look like a rich yellow orange-ish. Buckeye chicks here have varying levels of yellow orange-ish, especially compared to the Buff Orpingtons. But definitely not orange. Who else in your gang has yellow legs? Not the other chick in this picture….looking back a few posts mostly I see pink and grey (Tassels) legs.

Well, babies are scheduled to be picked up tomorrow night. Catching them after dark (or at least 3/4 dark) is going to be an adventure.

I will try again to get better pictures of Bucky. Her legs look very orange in person. Less so in photos.
She is overall a very pretty strawberry blonde gal!
But she does not keep still!

Also it is influenced by what they’re eating and where they are in maturity and the laying season. Laying hens will lose the yolk coloring in their legs to their eggs so it gets paler as the season progresses. At least I think I’ve read that somewhere!

Update on wee silkie babies. They were all out having a drink and eating when I did chores. I checked out wee Chippy-choo (I guess that’s her name now haha) and her butt is clear now. And the umbilicus looks dry. I’ll keep a close eye on her next few days.

They seem to be thriving, it’s supposed to be nice and warm here today so I will get Whiskers off the nest so I can get her and the bebes moved over to the pen in the Summer House.

Here are a couple of other baby mugs; I need to name these ladies if they elate going to stay.

Bittersweet moment - I am sure FIL will be happy, but it will noticeable be a bit 'quieter' with about 1/2 the zoomies going.

They are starting to look like little chickens (instead of babies!)

One of the pullets has managed to either get out early or spend the night outside 2 nights running. Catching them will certainly be an adventure! And things will quiet down a bit, thankfully

Looks like that’s a metal frame that you’ve got chicken wire or netting over? What did you get for the frame and is it sturdy? What do you do for winter? Do you cover it for snow and does it hold up?

We bought a 10x20 roundtop chicken run from Amazon. It does have a tarp but that caused the run to collapse over winter with heavy snow. We ended up buying the same model again to repair the top of this one.
The frame is sturdy enough for our use but if I tarp it for winter I will need to go in and get the snow off daily to prevent another collapse.
I also have nylon rope stretched all zig zagged across the roof to reinforce the chicken wire and give it better shape.

Can you use some 2x4s to reinforce the roof? A couple ground to roof...put it on a flat rock or paver, and you can use one of these at the top to fasten the metal run to the 2x4. Use a couple of 2x4s along the length for support. You can also run a 2x4 the length of the top...fasten the pipe of the run to it, then put a couple 2x4 uprights under it - that would be even better. (I would also suggest a couple of cross bars, but without seeing evertying, not sure how to do that.)
