& no artificial fertilizers or chemicals in use either... makes me mad to come across a dead bee... can't stop everyone from using pesticides but at least all my fruit tree neighbors on all sides of me don't use them

I went and took a good look at speckled Sussex pullets vs young Roos. The boys tend to develop fairly early, very often they feather in with a white breast, the girls do not. Combs come in early both boys and pullets. Wattles seem to generally pop early on the boys. So far my guess is she is the pullet you wanted.

My Sussex always made me question that at about that age. My RIR and Barred Rocks too. Are red wattles emerging too? If not, then no. Is so, keep an eye on it.

One of my Light Sussex pullets at (iirc) exactly one month old. Having a few from the same line to compare with really helps - the cockerels already had much bigger combs at this age.

Lovely photo, what I read were general observations and more of a combination. Chippys comb isn’t bright pink, I see no wattle development either. I am still thinking pullet.

I politely disagree, you can and should chicken sit for while, especially with the chicks. They grow up to darn fast They are absolutely adorable mama is doing a wonderful job too!

Meanwhile I am late for work because of that ‘sitting and watching babies’

Well, I STILL have no idea where the little imp spent the night. I was out just before the birds (wild) started calling and moving about. First glimpse I had of her...on the ground at the base of the honeysuckle next to the coop....

upper right corner of the pic for location. How did she get that far without me seeing her? Is she playing Tarzan and tree jumping?
