Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Most of my lot HATE to drink clean water. A couple of them will actually squeeze into the tiny gap behind one waterer if I refilled it recently, just so they can sip individual drops of rain or dew from the chicken wire fence.

They will drink from both horizontal and vertical nipples but mostly like to use those if it's raining and rain is running down the outside of the muddy container and onto the nipple.

The best thing happened today! We FINALLY were able to get my poor chickens out into the yard. We got an electric fence set up with a decent amount of space (planning for more later, but I'll take what we can get!). It of course took much longer to set up than planned, so they only had about an hour.
We videoed them coming out. It took them a while to figure out they could roam - they at first hung out right on front of the run.
The video involves my squeaky voice, so I'll spare you. Here's a few pictures of their first foray into the wider world outside of their run.
They had no fear of Jack the dog, having seen him waiting for me outside the run all their lives. Then he stood up and everyone freaked out.
I don't know if you can see the fence in the last picture, as it was really getting dark

DH wanted me to let the Polish also. I did, and evil Mirabel attacked poor little Jamie and the video ended suddenly. I ended up shutting the gate to the electric fence part and letting the Polish have a small space outside their run. Jamie never came out again, but the black one (Martina) scratched around happily until bedtime.

That’s awesome! I love electric fencing- keeps horses off the fence, and keeps bears out too!

Even keeps the kids in hand. Hahaha

I think she has persuaded him that the upper level is best. Left or right is still under discussion!

Blackberry, named after his comb. He's got streaks of orange in his feathers and he lets me pick him up and carry him around. He wasn't keen on being tucked into my coat like Vuitton enjoys though.

Diva has frostbite. she screamed when another bird bumped into her comb. From what I've seen I may need to trim the tips so they don't painfully rot off. I'll do more research.

Where the youngsters like to hang out. They have a food bowl under there and there's a heated waterer around the corner on the back porch. That's Hooky on the left, she's doing wonderfully after her trim. And the darker red boy next to Blackberry is Rusty. He's silkie/polish and crowing like a maniac.
