Poor hen. I am reminded of the kiwi.

Child birth is no joke.
I think the marsupials have a much more sensible way of doing it. A new born kangaroo joey is only as big as the first joint of a thumb.

Nah. I just thought the photo might look a bit rude.
:p
Well if I had to choose... I would certainly rather be a kangaroo!

Lucky
So Lucky was last to molt (not including the 1.5 year olds, who have not yet had their first real molt), and she was a hard, fast molter. She’s still molting on her head, but has squatted twice for me and is in the coop pacing bath and forth talking about eggs already! Nobody else has come back into lay yet. Lots of long, slow molting in my flock, which is fine by me!

Bridge
Bridge is standing and sitting a bit puffed, even though it’s warm. I’m not happy with this. It’s subtle, as she is also still eating, pooping, scratching, preening and being the boss. I won’t actually worry yet, but it’s a concern since she is almost 5 and (almost) stopped laying a couple years ago. She snapped out of it right after this, so perhaps she was just resting.

The nail gun noise is from a roof install next door.
Bridge did have that half closed eye "inward" look. She may be in pain or perhaps she is thinking about an egg?
How has she been for the rest of the day?

Yes it is perfectly normal for leghorns. They lay surprisingly large eggs for such small birds. They start small and get larger as they get older. I remember mine laying extra large white eggs.

@micstrachan and @Aussie-Chookmum how large are Dorothy's and Tsuki's eggs?
Tsuki hasn't laid for most of the year but her eggs were on the large size. Not as big as Deana's which you couldn't close the egg carton on, but sizable.

She was great for the rest of the day. However, I’m keeping an eye on her. I think tomorrow J’ll offer a baby bird formula treat with nutridrench in it.

I have been very remiss with FluffyButt Friday photos. Sorry ByBob 😔

Tsuki wasn't very co-operative , but I did get to try doing that-tap-on-the-subject focus thing with my phone.

This one was focused on Deana

and this was focused on Tsuki. Makes some difference with the lighting doesn't it?

Ooooh ByBob, how is your coop building article coming along?

Hubby has been pondering what I want and we started our new coop today. We are recycling bits of wood and ply left over from building the shed and the frame of our old water bed. We needed to buy new stuff for the coop's frame unfortunately.

It will be raised up on legs for ease of cleaning and to discourage rodents etc. This will be the floor.
