I love watching them build a nest. That is a great video. I can imagine that she was hard to find. She blends in very well.

It's funny, she bakawks just likes Lilly.

I can’t tell who’s doing the cacklecophony when they start up; Chickie and Charlie sound identical. Lucy’s mute so if she does go off, it gets whispered. Which is why, if C and C are nesting at the same time, I’ll shut Lucy in the run as she can’t raise the alarm.

If Bessie was still alive... I might have had to deal with two broodies simultaneously!!
Yeah, that's not fun. Last year my BRs went out in sympathy with each other. I had 3 @ one time.... :barnie
Still, if I ever want to raise chicks I know I have a better option than silkies! :D

Great story Bob. It's difficult to know what to do for the best in such situations. I've put myself between a few hawks and their intended prey here. I've been told I'm stupid.
Btw, what's a nerf gun?

My best chook friend who is the Frizzle breeder lost about four Frizzles to a hawk. When I asked what she did about it, she said she caught it, terrorised it for a bit and let it go. Apparently it didn’t come back.

Charlie seemed a lot better today. She was out for most of the day and didn’t seem to show any interest in a nest. One more night in broody jail should do it.

Now that is odd. I was speaking to a women who keeps chickens on the next mountain yesterday. She has also caught a hawk and did much the same as you mention your friend did. She has a net gun. She bought the net gun to catch her chickens.

These are plastic balls and wouldn’t kill anything.. just scare em away... Google “airsoft” gun/rifle.. I do not know how to post links..
I've had a look and they might work but they are too bulky to carry. My son in law has a pistol for paint ball and something like that with the right projectile might do it.

I was wondering about paintball but those things pack a punch. The one child of mine who tried it came home black & blue.

Black and blue is better than dead.
Because the chickens free range and because of the topography here I need something with a decent range. It's often not possible to get close.
