Chickens are smart & need stimulation but one of the things I have found difficult in a small backyard run, is stopping them killing their entertainment! The ficus, which all the chickens adore, used to spread out low to the ground providing cover & shade & everyone used to squash in under there. Chickens can make do with a lot less room than their ancestors and there are logical reasons why. Here for example it's a bout one acre per tribe. It's not so much the space, it's what's in that space. If sites like this concentrated a lot less on coop builds and more on runs, suggesting that at least double the current 10 aquare foot per chicken is where the money would be better spent. The article points out that cover in the way of plants is what chickens prefer. Junk in the run should be the new BYC slogan.
My fence hoppers have killed one passionfruit off but the other is starting to spread over the coop roof where hopefully it will not only provide shade but entertainment when the fruit starts dangling. I'm going to try a choko @ the other end. They took out all my herbs ~ which I had hoped would grow big enough they could eat what grew through the wire but nope ~ they hop the fence just to clean them up
I am lucky to have some really big trees that the man is willing to build around just to keep my chickens happy.

He used to get a bit stressed when I coop cleaned, particularly if he saw me taking eggs out.
I put them on the grass to one side now and he goes and checks them. I don't know if he counts them but when I finish cleaning and put the eggs back he goes and checks there too.
In one of these threads are pictures of this hen's (Nolia) sisters, Hinge and Bracket. The three are not from the same hatch but are from the same mother. Nolia's father was Harold; Hinge and Brackets, Harold's son Punch.

I've had a couple of roosters go for me when I've been caught stealing eggs. They seem more bothered about it than the hens.
