Ok. Thanks, Bob. The predators that we have seen in our yard, but not necessarily during the day, are fox, raccoon, bobcat, coyote, hawk, great horned owl, eagle and even mountain lion. Hawks fly over and scout out the yard on a regular basis. There are at least a few that live nearby. Coyote and bobcat have been seen during the day. The only predator attack I’m aware of we never knew what it was, but we felt pretty sure it was a fox, possibly juvenile, since the hen got away pretty much unharmed.
Ruby wouldn’t really stand a chance against a predator if it saw her and wanted her. Ruby’s days are probably numbered, and I’m thinking she might as well enjoy herself. I’m kind of leaning toward Shad’s philosophy with her.

Edited to add: did I tell you guys that she caught a mouse weekend?

Edited again to add: They are never allowed put without both me AND the dog, which might explain ehy we’ve only had one (unsuccessful) predator attack. My neighbor has lost lots of cats, we assume to predation, during the night.

It’s a tough call. Our first instinct is to protect. But you have a point that she should be able to enjoy her chicken life.
But if you and the dog are out when they are, I think I would let her go.

No, she’d be out alone. I’m leaving for work soon. The dog is out there (on a tether) right now and she’s dust-bathing under my neighbor’s tree. I haven’t seen her have a proper dust bath in a while.

BREAKOUT!!!!!!!!

I'm not certain if you remember back when Phyllis breached the perimeter fence but when she did I was most worried that it might have been Aurora. My main fear being that I can't touch Aurora and she won't let me get close enough to catch her. How would i ever get her back into the fence if she ever got out.

Well today I learned what would happen. My fears came true and Aurora breached containment.

Since her last knee replacement, Mrs BY Bob has left the lawn mowing to me. She used to like to do it but it was too hard. She has decided that she is finally ready to mow again but just the flat part of the yard, no hills. No problem, I am grateful for the help. So when I mowed last night, I left the small portion of the side for her to mow.

Now the hens, normally Phyllis and Hattie have been very interested in the world beyond the gate for some time. I have to be careful when I open and close the side gate. Today, when taking the mower out, Mrs BY Bob was not careful.

I was sitting at my desk working on an agreement and my phone rang. Not unusual but it was Mrs BY Bob calling. I figured she was having issues seating the battery into the mower. Nope. I heard, HELP! AURORA IS OUT! I CAN'T GET HER BACK IN! I was out the door in a flash.

As I am going a plan is developing in my head. Perhaps I can use her fear of being touched to my advantage and push her back in through the gate like two magnets with the same pole.

The video will tell the truth. I was smart enough to record my efforts. Enjoy! Try not to laugh too hard. I know I did afterwards.

This is hysterical. At least she stayed in the yard and didn’t run for the street. 😂😂

Ok, you peeps lacked so much sympathy, when I told you that Leann bit my ear (actually nibbled on it) that I had to bring my emotional support rooster in to get some sympathy. Nah, I just wanted his company for a while. :p
You are right. I wasn’t appropriately sympathetic. My bad.
I just assumed that you enjoyed it. :lau
