I have been wanting to do this for some time now. I knew once I started doing this there would be no going back. So I am now diving in and I hope you all enjoy coming along for the ride.

First of all let me tell you how we view our flock as that will help you to understand why we treat them like we do.

Our birds are our pets and we treat them as such. We do not care if someone is not laying eggs. They are welcome to stay at Fluffy Butt Acres until they pass naturally. (Now don't go telling them that! I would hate for word to get out) We do thoroughly enjoy the fresh eggs.

I plan to tell stories from the past as well as from today. I hope you all enjoy and will share stories of your flocks as well.
I love it and can’t wait for more! I found a sign for ours when we finally get it built. (Which has to be soon since our new chicks are growing FAST!)

I am happy to report that I am finally caught up with the thread... for now! It's been a while since I've last been on here. The abandoned baby chick I found a couple weeks ago have been keeping me busy... I decided to name her Kiko, which means hope! She's doing well, but is constantly in need of lots of love and attention, not that I'm complaining!

I am so glad to her that she is doing well. What a cutie pie! 💓

Does anyone have experience of crows and hawks?
I seem to have a lot of (very noisy) crows this year and twice today they have seen off a hawk right over the Chicken Palace yard!
Crows and Hawks fight all the time. Crows are excellent to keep hawks away. You should feed them as a thank you. 😉

Crows are good to have around. They will pester anything they think is a threat and drive them away. They live in family groups, patrol and see much of everything, alerting every other crow in the area to what's going on (probably all relatives) and are very alert to any of their predators - hawks and owls, but even climbing predators. I have seen them mobbing a raccoon who was merely napping on a low pine tree branch.

One thought, you probably have considered - is there an advantage to getting the new ones when they are very young, so they really bond with Phyllis and learn to get along with the others more from the get-go? Or do chickens figure this out well enough, and being pullets are still young enough?
I would love to get them younger but they will not guarantee the sex. I cannot wind up with a rooster so I wait. I would like to get them now so that they grew up with Phyllis but that just isn't practical.

That sign is outstanding! Chicks grow so fast. Treasure your time with them.

We Have a Hatch!

You have me thinking. I am wondering if the birds I thought were Northern mockingbirds are in fact gray catbirds.
I have been sitting with the Princesses and my Peterson’s guide and trying to really look at them as they fly by.
They are very similar. And maybe I have both.
There is clearly a nest nearby as they really harried a fox just now.
What with crows seeing off hawks and some unidentified gray bird chasing off foxes, the Princesses are having a good day!
