That's a little frightening.
Yeah, I’m not sure what’s going on. The tarps are up and maybe they like being in there? One thing that has come to mind lately is that their gate is very exposed. Maybe they feel vulnerable coming out there when theg can’t see what’s out there. I might get some clear vinyl and put it up for winter instead of the tarps. They also might like it if I put a little gate somewhere on the back side of the run that’s hidden by the walnut tree. But then I’d have two gates to keep track of.

They have 3 different exits from my complex. This also gives them 2 different routes from one side to the other. My advice is a second gate.

Imagine a dog attacks while they are free ranging. If they run into their coop complex to escape it they are running into a dead end trap. I tried to eliminate dead ends as much as possible with my complex. Aside from the coops themselves there are multiple exits from each run on purpose.

Great advice. I’ve been thinking about it for some time, but forgot about the trap piece.

Correction. It’s already 48°. Poor Flo! I think I’ll get up early tomorrow, open the door and turn the heater back on until I leave for work. There is a wind advisory for tomorrow night and I’ll do the same thing I did tonight. She was working hard preening, so hopefully there’s a tiny bit of fluff on the ends of her pin feathers.
You are doing great to help her. Last week mine would have killed for 48°F. This week we'll top out in the 60s most days. Hopefully my lot will grow some feathers in the next week before it gets cold again.

What a great portrait! Is that Sylvie on the right? Legertha is darker and has more poof? Or am I mixing them up? Anyway, that sideways look is quite dashing!
You got it correct. Legertha on the left. Sylvie on the right. Sylvie is quite the character. I love her look in that photo too.

Well, for outside work that's true! ("A man, his work is with the sun, a woman's work is never done")

Tax. Neighbor's farm. I think this hen didn't get back to the coop before closing, now she's locked out until they open up. Why they haven't opened yet for the day I don't know, they seem to be gone. But she has a friend!

Good balance work, stayed on and settled down again while the goat got up!

Smart chicken. She got a heated roost. Safe too I bet.
