I believe it's called lack of investment. This is certainly the case in the UK.
Unfortunately the current UK encumbants want to adopt a private care system like in the USA.
There hasn't been a worse idea in the last 100 years. Why is it the UK tries to import all the American crap but never imports the good bits.

I am in favour of a two tier system, if u can afford private care go for it. Take some strain off the public system.

I told my veterinarian I would hire her for my back hahaha. Get me fixed up.... She told me I am old and need to be put out to pasture 😆 I am all for retirement buy seems I am working on freedom 95!!!!! Rather that freedom 55. Boohoo!

Waiting for Santa

Many of you will recall in that in 2019 3 of my 4 hens got to see Santa. When you got to PetsMart, you had to wait in your car with your "pet" until it was your turn to see Santa. I realized today that I took video of Aurora patiently waiting in the car for her chance to see Santa. You can see the excitement and expectation in her face. Watch along with me.

Here is her photo with the big guy from 2 years ago today.

OMG awesome 🤗

I want to take Fluffy McNugget to see 🎅!

I will try and explain that to Dotty, but I think she has a teenage crush on Phyllis. Dotty’s ‘do’ gets more outlandish every day.
Will try and get some shots of her this morning when I am done fending off the Princesses who are determined to help me build the damn step. Honestly it is one step forward and then two steps back with them.
I may have to lock them out in the run for a couple of hours so I can make some progress.
BFTP:

Well, if it is one step forward & 2 steps back, just turn around & 'go backwards" and you'll be done in no time!!!:lau:lau:lau

Chicken poop... Marginally better than racoon poop... Okay way better. But still gross when on you eggs.

My chicks ( now a couple of months old) refuse to roost I need the new roost I put in for them. My little Rose roosts on the edge of one of the nest boxes and poops on any eggs on there...

Last night I grabbed the poopy egg - a huge one from Sophia- and went to wash the doodoo off it, but silly me left my glove on the hand holding the egg... It sure is slippery with cotton gloves on, which is why it ended up splattered on the barn floor, Boohoo!!!! Third one that week, duh!

This weekend chickie-loos are going to learn about roosting!!!! Maybe eggs will survive my ministrations then 🐣

There she is roosting on the edge of the nest box... It can't be comfortable.

I am holding Jaffar very close right now. I know he’s not feeling well, I’m not either, but I did just share my dinner with him (fried cheeseburger) Jaffar was just standing out in the rain getting cold. He’s warm and safe now. But I worry about him. He’s my buddy and I can’t afford to lose him. As backup, I have Shenandoah, Coco, BoPeeps, Hen-Rietta, and Xzit in the chickens room just in case.

It’s the poop that binds us! 😆

Aurora and Sydney

Before Sydney hatched the chicks Aurora was very anti-Sydney and tried to keep her from roosting the same way as Sansa was trying last night.

The dynamics have changed completely since the chicks hatched. Aurora was the first auntie interested in them and Sydney never ran from Aurora or got upset with her being around the chicks. In fact, she can frequently can be found hanging around the family.

Aurora has become much nicer to Phyllis as well since the chicks were born. The whole thing seems to have made Aurora more secure than she was before. Here she is with Sydney from Friday night.

Another BFTP:
I wonder why the chicks have made Aurora more confident/better, and Sansa less so? Interesting chicken behavior observations....would love to understand the reasons/motivations behind these changes. 🤔 (maybe @Shadrach adds insight later?)

My Henny Penny turned into a demon with her chicks, she attacked everyone including her two sisters.

Now that the chicks are a couple months old, Henny laid her first egg today since going broody and is back to being Besties with her sisters... Go figure! And her sisters hand around the chicks now.

Chicken politics!
