Ok, so here’s a big “crazy chicken lady” statement. Call it social isolation, cabin fever, or whatever… but I talk to the animals a lot, perhaps a little too much. When I’m working on the house I’ll call to the goats in the barn, and get a “yes mom” answer back. Well, with the chickens (and especially while Sammy was stuck recovering from his morning squabble with Dean in the human coop) I’ve been “talking” chicken to the chickens… and they have been responding. I do the “whiorrrr” BBB predator call and they go for cover.
SHRA taxDust bathing removes the old oils from their feathers so that they can keep them fresh. They can then preen and replace the older oils with fresh.
I agree. My 2 older roosters teach the younger cockrells and I often see the younger taking on the habits of the older boys.Always, nurture over nature when it comes to roosters. Always. They need to be taught by someone.
Very informative and jives with what I have been observing here. My 2 older flocks take turns at the good spot so the younger flock created their own bath under my boat trailer. It's not something that is in my mind; it's a fact. Read just about any well informed paper on chickens and it will tell you much the same. Chickens dust bath to soak up the oil they secrete that conditons their feathers and skin.
