We are grounded through mid April, could be longer. We work with hospitals and they have no time for us right now anyway.
That makes total sense. I don't actually think this is a two week ordeal, and I think the panic will last longer than we think. I really can't figure out why the panic is greater this time than with previous viruses, or with the flu. We're prepared because of the panic, not because we think this virus is going to take over the USA. I haven't heard anything to tell me that's even a possibility at this point.

I have to talk with people all the time about this. It is so sad to watch.

The CDC estimates the death toll for this season's flu is between 20,000 and 52,000 people in the US alone. We closed no schools, canceled no sports events or concerts, canceled no religious ceremonies.

This virus shows up and the panic sets in and everything goes crazy. Our local grocery store ran out of beans today. That's right, beans.

This will not subside in two weeks. How long do we stop living our lives? Expect this to last through the summer. At what point does the panic end and people get tired of Covid-19 and want their lives back.

I don't know, but I doubt 2 weeks is going to do the trick.

It’s Kick-Off Day!!

Today is the end of the quarantine period and everyone was let out to free-range. I let the big girls out first and brought Lucy and Chickie over to the newbies. Charlie saw them when she wandered past. I then let the new girls out.

They were so much more confident than Charlie and Bessie, but they were 19 week-old pullets whereas Tegan, Nyssa and River are hens around a year old. They immediately started exploring confidently.

Charlie walked up. She didn’t appear to make any move against them but started scratching around with them. One of the salmons challenged her. I thought I had filmed it but I was already filming and turned the camera off. I wasn’t sure who won that round. They then walked around a raised bed and Tegan saw Chickie.

I had the camera on again. Tegan challenged Chickie and I’m not sure who won as Lucy stepped in. I know she was always going to be up for the challenge but I wondered if she was protecting Chickie. Lucy definitely came out on top.

Later, Charlie moseyed on over and a salmon quickly skirted around her. Later still, Charlie chased one of them. She won her spar!

Apart from the first one, Chickie didn’t challenge anyone, but she complained a lot. She probably just wasn’t up for it.

The older girls ended up in the tractor and the newbies found the run. We had a huge Liquid Amber removed over a year ago and the ground-up stump is breaking back down into dirt. The salmons were there for most of the day!

The newbies aren’t terrified of me either, which is nice!

That’s River next to my legs, she had a good scratch around. She then walked over me! I didn’t have the camera ready, she was too quick.

Then it started to spit so everyone got put back in their respective cages. All in all, a successful day!

Excellent Lozzy! They all looked quite relaxed too :love

Me either, but I feel a responsibility to them. I try to strike a balance between safety and freedom, and mostly it has worked. :fl I think most of us do this.
The balance I have to try to achieve and the one that causes me most distress is the balance of life and death.

It was hard for me to lock them in the coop while I hardened everything. I had to do it. But I did not like it. I love how much freedom I can give them now.

My company has banned all travel for at least the next 30 days.

Good news for the ladies, tons of free range upcoming.

Could be bad news for my marriage. I don't believe we're have spent 30 straight nights together in our 32 years of marriage. This is like a test run for retirement.

Who knows?

I may need to go see Eve and work from her house for a while.
You can always move in with the chickens Bob.:D
