9 Years Ago Today

Today is a big anniversary date around these parts. 9 years ago today, April 8, 2013 our first chickens came home with us from tractor supply. For those of you who don't know the story, you can find it here.

Post in thread 'Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock' https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...es-stories-of-our-flock.1286630/post-20958609

Here are those first chicks. Beautiful white leghorns all.

And here are all of the other chickens who have lived with us, even for a short time, here at Fluffy Butt Acres. All have touched our hearts and enriched our lives in some wonderful way.

I know it is expensive, but Scratch and Peck makes non-soy/corn organic feed. They have a new one with grub protein that is crumbles or pellets (while I love the company and their feed/ethics, my chooks would waste most of the non-pellet/crumble feed, and I haven't had luck with fermenting - which is what I would need to do if I used their non-pellet feed - so I am SOOOO happy they have added this line .)
Grower Crumbles w/grub protein
Layer crumbles w/ grub protien
They have layer pellets, too. However, if I recall, you sometimes use a mix of grower and layer due to non or low laying periods.

Since this company is in the Pacific Northwest, there may be a local store that stocks it in your area. I would have to drive all the way to @BY Bob 's area to pick it up instead of having it shipped. :(
Thanks for this! Scratch and Peck is sold locally, but not at my feed store. I thought they only had non-pellet feed, which might only add to the fat problem if they hand select what they eat. GREAT to know they have pellet (or is it only crumble?) feed. 16% protein seems low, but I can supplement with sardines, beef liver, etc.

The blue is the icky veggie based feed, and the yellow label is my animal protein containing one blue is from otter co-op (Vancouver based around Langley) and the yellow from top shelf (Vancouver island based near Duncan) both are 18% layer rations
I like 18% and that the min. fat is lowert than mine at 2.5%. Can you also share the ingredients part of the tag?

So I’m sorry I don’t have any new fluffy butt shots to share. It’s been been very busy with the death of a chicken, very busy at work, and living arrangements. Plus, because I need some sanity, I am working on that quilt. 🤣

OK, so I’ve had a couple glasses of wine… Just a disclaimer…. But I want you all to know that I love you, and coming back to this safe place is very peaceful for me. I’m sorry I’ve not been able to keep up.

Princess gave me the impression that she was bullying Tina but maybe I'm being misled. The past few nights instead of princess being the furthest inside the coop for sleep I've witnessed little Tina has now been placed there. This melted my heart ...

Not a very good picture but there is my little one against the coop wall. They (princess and Tina) were snuggled up until the crazy slave took this picture then flexi photo bombed

That's so sweet. 🥰

My friend went into hospital with a heart problem, she's out now and 4 other's have been suffering with the strangest headaches ( what is peculiar is they cannot establish where the pain is in the head front back or side) and awful stomach problems. Two tested positive for covid but they should be okay because all have had their jabs. My other friends brother had a blood clot on his brain he had a bad reaction. He's only 23

The medical system is so much more advanced now so I'm hoping everyone will pull through
Prayers for you and all of your friends. :hugs:hugs

It's wonderful here and we could visit! I think it would be worth it.

Sadly, they don’t actually give the full ingredients, you can contact them and they do give you a list, but I believe it varies quite a bit. I’m happy with the quality and haven’t had any issues… the missing part of the yellow tag is mostly the brand, product description, and selenium addition warning, but they are both (relatively) local feed mills that produce on site, and both offer bulk deliveries if you’re looking for a few tons at once! We have a friend on a smaller island less than 50 people, who gets twice a year deliveries for her livestock (sheep and cattle) as well as fuel (gasoline and propane) she orders in a barge and everything gets delivered at once!

Chicken friends are the best friends… :hugsdon’t worry about keeping up, it’s basically a full time job IMO 😉 just swing by when you can, and need to. Everyone forgave me for dropping off the face of the net for half a year or more, I do t think keeping fully up to date is a requirement. Life gets crazy… except for Bob, he’s not allowed days off as the official host! 😂😉😂(Remembering when he took a Weekend to visit family without warning us, and we were all worried sick!)

Yes, that was why I stopped using it for a while...my hens picked out the seeds, and flipped out the ground part which was the supplements (nutritional)...But they now have layer pellets. (I can now get organic soy free layer locally, so don't use these)...BUT will shortly be offering grower crumbles with BSFL...I'm so excited. (I can't get organic all flock, so make my own mix of layer/grower so the Roos are okay)
