A Memory of some Special Ladies

Google does this thing where it shows me photos from previous years every Sunday. This came up today. It is from March, 3 years ago. 2 of my special girls enjoying a meal together. I miss them both but it is getting easier to remember them and the good times we had.

They certainly enjoy their spaghetti!

Your Daisy (greatest hen ever) looks very different to my Tsuki Bob. She has a bigger and floppier comb and is much more streamlined. More like a game bird build.

I assume the plan is for the chicken palace to hold them off?

Yes so the structure you see in the camera is the first run of the Chicken Palace. You can see her investigating how to break in. And she has been there often as there are muddy paw prints on the wire all the way up to the roof. So far my Fort Knox approach to construction of the Chicken Palace seems to be holding up. I have cattle panels up to 4' and 1/2" hardware cloth from top to bottom and a skirt out 2' of both cattle panel and hardware cloth. I haven't figured out quite how yet but I am also going to run an electric wire at 'nose height' around the outside. Seeing the raccoon in action has made it even clearer to me that I need everything I can throw at security!

Daisy. the greatest hen ever, was very slim. Phyllis reminds me of her a lot in body size and shape. I got this photo of her one day because she reminded me of a pidgeon (@biophiliac ) and not a chicken sitting there.

Tractor supply has electric fence and instructions on how to run it. You may want to start there. I endorse the electric fence concept for you because of all the predators you are seeing despite the excellent construction of the palace.

I have electric wire around my chicken run at nose height and it has so far kept the raccoons out.

I'm sorry. My brain is not working these days. I have hotwire around my run at nose height and that has kept the raccoons out. And I use hardware cloth, not chicken wire. I'll go back and fix that statement.
