You should probably get two, just to let her have a friend… maybe three just in case… you know five is also a nice number. It would be nice if you could use this a a bribe for better integration with Grandma, but with the short term memory issues that her condition brings there’s not a lot of point because within a few days she will have forgotten the promised hens for being nice and slip back into abusive behaviours. But if things work well going towards fall, getting established mature hens (note the assumed plural there? She will really want to take a friend with her) is probably better than hatching some out, and you will be providing a great home for some girls…
I actually agree. 1 Polish alone is not fair to the Polish. You should have a pair. I have gone through a lot to get to 2. The best situation is 3 so you have a spare one.

Just saying.

I can’t come up with anything funny about a woodpecker. They are an animal, that spends whole life, banging its head against a tree. (Ever wonder if they get headaches?)
My dad had one decide to bang on the roof he'd just finished.....(it had started this while he was working on it, just not quite so boldly)
Dad was still on the ladder, so he came up over the edge of the roof to bang both hands down, arms length in, shoulder width apart......

The woodpecker was between his hands.....

It didn't come back...

I don't think it had a headache, just shed some feathers in fright.

Interesting. When Maggie lost her balance and stopped roosting she slept in a nest box and crapped happily in it all night long. I was glad when she decided to go back to roosting so I didn’t have to clean the nest box each morning.
This is why I’m trying to train all my girls to roost!

According to Audubon bird app, it appears to be a red-bellied woodpecked. It says the red belly is hard to see.

No not Emu's sadly. I wish I could have 1 or 2, but I know I do not live in a place that I could have any. I do know of a place a little over a hour away that people visit that have Ostriches and Bison. I have never had a desire to see a Ostrich so never visited. Emu's are definitely a different story. And nope not a dozen Polish, I do not need a dozen. Frankly I do not need a pair of Polish but if things settle down with her and she accepts that she has to stay with us I will find a way to get her a polish hen. Thanks to a phone call from her neighbor she is more determined then ever to go home and I could strangle the man. All she cares about is her garden that was planted the day she had the stroke. Had her convinced that she was unable to take care of it anymore when he called this past Wednesday. He informed her that not only were her peas up, but he'd planted tomatoes, cucumbers and pepper plants for her and wanted to know if she needed anything else planted. We are literally back to square 1 with her again.
Some one just trying to be helpful. I can imagine how frustrating that is. :hugs :hugs
