Thanks. I'm pretty good when the girls have infections or parasites, the egg laying problems scare me. Im learning though.

Hmm, may have to pick your brain in that regard. Lucy and Chickie still have vent lice (and assuming Charlie does too, not that I can get anywhere near her!) I bought super fine DE plus a mite dust made from Neem leaf and liberally sprinkled both nests with both. The Pestene dust doesn't say that the active ingredient is Permethrin (as mentioned by @mixedUPturk ) but I wonder if it's called something different in Australia. There are a number of different products that I can rotate through if need be to prevent resistance, but I'm finding it quite distressing to see these little buggars all over my precious girls! Can it take a few days for the lice to die or should it be instant?

Can you take a picture of the label? I don't know what is in Pestene. Let me look on the web to .

Ok. Pestene uses Rotenone as its active ingredient.

Rotenone is an odorless, colorless, crystal used as a broad-spectrum insecticide, piscicide, and pesticide. It occurs naturally in the seeds and stems of plants.

It should work on the lice. It does break down in sunlight. So you need to keep applying every 6 days as it loses effectiveness around then. You have to make sure the dust gets all the way to the skin for it to be effective.

You may want to add an initial dose by spray to make certain you get it to the skin around the vent. There are several you can use. They work very quickly and it's easy to see if you have gotten it all the way to their skin.

After a spray dose then dust them again and keep dusting the environment until you no longer see any.

I hope that helps. They are nasty buggers.

Excellent article!!

Did you ever work at the Med Center? I worked there for 12 years. When we met up that day for the fence, I swear I've met you before. I worked in Infectious Diseases for 6 years, plus many other departments.

Thanks. I’m glad you liked the article.

I worked in Lewisburg and Danville. Never in the Harrisburg area hospitals.

Gotcha! One of the best Infectious Disease doctors I ever worked with was a Microbiologist from the Reading area. She is now the Chief of Infectious Diseases in Reading, her name is Deb Powell.
